Woman commuter whose leg was trapped in MRT train apologises for disrupting service

She denies rushing to board train as doors were closing but says she's "lucky to be alive".

Housewife Chen Mei Juan, who regained consciousness yesterday after undergoing a seven-hour operation on her leg which got trapped in the platform gap at Clementi MRT station on Saturday, has apologised for causing disruption to the train service.  

Blaming herself for being careless, she told Lianhe Zaobao: "It was the rush hour when I met with the accident. I feel bad about it."  

The incident happened on the eastbound platform at Clementi MRT station at about 8.30am on Saturday. MRT services from Queenstown to Jurong East were disrupted for about 20 minutes and resumed at about 8.50 am.
Civil defence officers arrived within three minutes and freed the woman's leg from the 7.5cm-wide gap.  She was taken to the National University Hospital (NUH) unconscious with injuries to her lower left leg and abrasions on her upper left arm.

Madam Chen, 49, is under observation at NUH, but doctors say her condition is stable.  When reporters visited her yesterday, she seemed to be still in a state of shock, and her speech was slightly slurred.

Recounting the incident, she said she had just finished her Qigong practice and was heading to Fairprice Clementi to buy Chinese New Year goods, and then to visit her father.  She denied that she was rushing to board the train while the doors were closing when her leg leg got trapped in the platform gap.

Said Madam Chen , who lives in the Lavender Street area and was wearing stilleto boots that morning: "I had actually just arrived at Clementi station when I fell."  She explained that her left heel somehow got stuck in the platform gap, causing her to lose her balance. She then fell and blanked out, unaware that she was being dragged for three metres, screaming in pain before the train came to a halt.  

Commuters on the platform activated the emergency button and SMRT staff cut off the power supply to the train.  Said Madam Chen: "After I lost my balance and fell, my head hit the floor and I blacked out. I can't remember anything after that."  

Madam Chen is reported to have fractured her hip. Her left leg and her left forearm are now wrapped in bandages and cast. Streaks of dried blood remains on her left cheek.  "I am told the doctors operated on me for 7 hours yesterday. They inserted a metal plate into my leg, and it will be about another week before they can perform another operation to remove it," she said.  "After the operation, I feel numb all over and I still haven't eaten. But I count myself lucky to be still alive, at least."  

The SMRT is investigating the incident and advised commuters not to attempt to board trains when the doors are about to close.  

An SMRT spokesman said that the platform gaps are designed with the minimum possible width of 7.5cm for elevated stations and 10cm for underground ones. This is to allow for the train to move laterally as it pulls into the station.

Last year, SMRT started announcements over the public address system reminding commuters to "mind the platform gap" after incidents in which commuters got their feet caught.  In 2002, a 10-year-old boy whose right foot slipped into the gap between the platform and the train, was dragged for about 10m at Bishan station before he managed to free himself.

The gap problem could be solved by a ramp, designed by three local polytechnic students, that can be attached to train cabins.  

The Land Transport Authority will test the device in the coming months. The automated ramp is designed to be fitted under the doors of cabins, popping out to bridge most of the gap when the door opens.

Trying to get a seat on the MRT during peak hours is difficult, but this lady made it more difficult when she decided that her bags needed the seat more than herself.

STOMPer Edmund Tan was incensed by the lady's actions while he was heading to work on a Boon Lay-bound train on Saturday 27 January at about 9am. The 34 year old marketing manager noticed another woman who had a child with her, whom he thought should have deserved a seat more.

Mr Tan remarked to STOMP, "I think it's rather selfish on the part of this woman. It was very obvious that there were not enough seats for everybody on board, and yet she had decided to waste one on her shopping bags."

Mr Tan added, "However, nobody confronted her about her actions, nor did anybody ask to have the seat."

ni bukannye ape...die x mo duduk sebelah ngan budak mamak tu...biase ler cina...dorang ingat dorang ni clean sangat.
