Sudirman Cup frustration pushes Hui Lin to prove herself
KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Ng Hui Lin was included for the first time in the team for the recent Sudirman Cup world mixed team championship but she went to Guangzhou to warm the bench.
But the disappointment in not getting to play a single match has sparked a renewed hope for the mixed doubles shuttler to prove her worth in the national team.
Malaysia reached the semi-finals for the first time in the Division One of the Sudirman Cup to earn the bronze medal but Hui Lin was not selected to play in any of the group ties because of her lack of experience.
揑 am happy that the team made the semi-finals. Although I did not get to play, it was a good experience to be in the team. I had to help and support the team in whatever way I could, |

Back-up pair give top seeds Koo-Tan one helluva fight

KUANTAN: Top national men抯 doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were just a whisker away from being dumped in the quarter-finals of the Pahang Open badminton championships yesterday.
The top seeds, however, survived to fight another day when they staved off a strong challenge from back-up shuttlers Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong for a 15-21, 21-10, 22-20 win at the Pahang Sports Complex Indoor Stadium here.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong were leading 20-18 in the decider but Hee Chun-Wee Kiong fought gallantly to level the score.
But, in the end it proved in vain as Hee Chun-Wee Kiong failed to come good when it mattered most in the 42-minute encounter.
Hee Chun was visibly upset after coming so close to scoring a major upset of the day.

No Lin Dan and Chong Wei title showdown in Lion City
KUANTAN: Badminton fans can forget about another title showdown between world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei and China抯 Lin Dan in the men抯 singles event at the Singapore Open from June 9-14.
Lin Dan, who is selective of his tournaments, has chosen to skip the Super Series event.
Just two weeks ago, Lin Dan showed that he was still better than Chong Wei by beating the Malaysian in the semi-final tie of the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou.
Indonesia抯 Taufik Hidayat is also missing from the cast for the Singapore Open based on the qualifiers |

Tan Fook puts coaching offer in China on hold
KUANTAN: Men抯 doubles shuttler Choong Tan Fook has decided to put on hold an offer to take up a coaching job in China.
He is more interested in having a good time with partner Lee Wan Wah in their last World Championships outing in Hyderabad, India, from Aug 10-16.
The duo, who left the national team after the Beijing Olympics in August and bound by a two-year contract with Victor, have qualified as the third men抯 pair for the world meet. The other two are Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.
Tan Fook has made several trips to China this year.
He has been playing in a weekly Challenge Trophy in Guangzhou and also training with his girlfriend Zhang Jiewen.
During one of those visits, the Guangzhou Badminton Association had asked Tan Fook to take up a coaching job with the province.
揑 would have probably been there for a total of four weeks this year. These activities have kept me in touch with the game, |
