PUNGGOL MURDER
Dead man walking
BLOODY TRAIL
Victim stagger out of flat along common corridor, past lift landing to multi-storey carpark
He goes to void deck and crosses road near LRT track
Still bleeding heavily, he goes down footpath before collapsing
By Dawn Chia
December 10, 2005
HE had been stabbed in or near his Punggol flat and was bleeding badly.
Instead of seeking help from neighbours or passers-by, the man staggered for about 400 metres, crossing an HDB multi-storey carpark and even a main road before he collapsed.
--Kelvin Chng
He must have been in agony as he left a trail of blood during his walk of death. And the reason for his strange action has died with him.
The man, dressed in a black polo T-shirt and light blue jeans, was found bleeding and lying motionless along a footpath.
He was taken to Changi General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9.20pm last night.
Oddly, too, although the attack happened about an hour earlier, when many people would be returning home from work or having dinner, no one saw the bleeding man. Or if they did, no one went to his aid.
The first indication that something was wrong was when residents at Block 171B heard yelling and harsh words resonating from a fifth-floor flat.
The commotion shattered the usual quiet on Edgedale Plains in Punggol.
Almost immediately, neighbours heard the smashing of items, followed by a woman screaming at the top of her lungs.
Then came complete silence.
Many stuck their heads out of their flats in curiosity, but then went back to whatever they were doing.
They dismissed it as a family dispute.
But unknown to them, the man was staggering in pain after being stabbed.
The police said that the victim was believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s. At presstime today, they had yet to identify him.
They were alerted to a fight along the fourth or fifth-floor corridor at about 8.20pm.
When they arrived, they found a few broken pieces of wooden sticks, about 10-15cm each, at the staircase landing between the fourth and fifth floor, and along the fourth-floor corridor.
Blood splatters and stains marked the victim's final journey.
The bloody trail suggested that the man had staggered from the fifth-floor unit down a flight of stairs to the fourth floor.
From there, he struggled to make his way along the corridor to the connecting multi-storey carpark and walked down two decks.
Then he stumbled to a connecting HDB block and took the stairs down to the ground.
Dripping with blood, he crossed the Punggol Field main road, including a grass patch below the overhead LRT line.
He staggered towards a path where he was likely to have used his hands to brace himself from a fall.
He finally collapsed along a footpath between Blocks 126 and 128.
A resident in the block, who only wanted to be known as Mr Lee, said he heard the commotion while he was watching the comedy Mr Bean with his family.
The 45-year-old, who lives on the 15th floor, told The New Paper: 'We heard a man shout very loudly, as if he was scolding someone.
'Then someone started smashing things and a woman screamed.
'I looked out of my flat and saw a lot of heads sticking out of their units.'
A couple on the sixth floor said the occupants of the fifth-floor unit had moved in about two months ago.
The flat was said to be vacant for a few months after the previous owner moved out.
Mr Chen said: 'We don't really know who the owners are now, but we've seen a couple overseeing the installation of their air-con about two months ago.
'So far, this is the only time we heard such a violent quarrel coming from the flat.'
This morning, The New Paper went to the flat, but no one answered the doorbell.
The police said they have not made any arrests and are investigating the case as murder. Anyone with information to call their hotline on 1800-255 0000. - Additional reporting by ALVIN CHIANG |

Stabbed man leaves a 500m trail of blood
Chinese overstayer believed to have been fleeing from his attackers
By Khushwant Singh
Dec 10, 2005
The Straits Times
A CHINESE national stabbed in Punggol on Thursday night left a 500m trail of blood on staircases, along corridors, across a void deck and on two roads before he collapsed on a footpath.
The victim, whom police said was an overstayer, was still alive when paramedics reached him at 8.40pm but he died less than an hour later in Changi General Hospital.
Neighbours said the man, in his mid-20s, was part of a group of men and a woman who moved into a fifth floor flat in Block 171B, Edgedale Plains about a month ago.
They kept to themselves and did not cause any trouble. Then on Thursday evening, neighbours heard several men shouting, a woman screaming and sounds of people running.
Neighbours living below the victim's flat believe he had tried to flee as the padlock and keys to the flat had been dropped just outside the front door.
A neighbour on an upper floor had looked down after hearing the commotion and saw at least six men running down the central staircase before she lost sight of them.
The attackers seemed to have caught up with their victim at the staircase landing barely 8m away from the flat entrance. There were bloodstains at chest height and on the floor.
The stabbed man also left a trail of blood stains and bloody palm prints on railings, walls and the floor.
Mr K. Karthijesan, 23, a civil servant, had just returned from the beach when he heard three or four men shouting along the corridor outside his fourth-floor flat.
The shouts faded quickly so he was not too concerned but was stunned when he opened his door later and saw the blood stains. 'There was a lot of blood around and I got goose-bumps,' he said.
Neighbours told The Straits Times that a Malay family lived in the flat until two months ago and might have rented it out.
As the dead man is an overstayer, the flat owners may be in trouble for harbouring an illegal immigrant. They could be jailed and even evicted.
Police did not disclose the man's identity as they are in the process of informing his next of kin.
No weapon was found but police said there were several pieces of a wooden stick about 10-15cm long on a staircase landing and along the fourth-floor corridor. |

Sex with underage girls: Two jailed
Teen gets three months, while 39-year-old jailed for 14 months
By Chong Chee Kin
Dec 10, 2005
The Straits Times
TWO people - one of them a 17-year-old - were convicted of having sex with underage girls in separate cases yesterday.
However, unlike the four young footballers who were recently all given probation for a similar offence, both offenders were jailed.
The teenager pestered a 13-year-old schoolmate to sleep with him by threatening to spread rumours about her in school.
The other offender was a 39-year-old man who slept with a 15-year-old girl and made her pregnant.
A district court jailed Ahmad Abdullah for 14 months after he admitted to having sex with a girl he got to know through a mutual friend.
The court heard that the two had first become acquainted in September last year and within a few days, he asked her to be his girlfriend.
A month later, he brought her to a relative's flat in Yishun where he had sex with her for the first time. They had sex on another two occasions that month.
Two months later, in December, she found out she was pregnant.
Ahmad told her that he would marry her once she turned 16 in April this year.
But in January, she had a miscarriage. He was then arrested.
In the other case yesterday, Muhammad Shahdinar Selamat was jailed for three months for having sex with an underage schoolmate.
The court heard how he approached the girl after he spotted her kissing another boy behind the school canteen.
He told her he wanted her to do the same to him, otherwise he would spread rumours about her.
She gave in.
A month later, in February, he took her to a nearby block and pressured her into having sex with him.
He was found out when the girl, who was being counselled after she was caught smoking in school, confided in her counsellor.
The offenders could have been jailed for up to five years and fined the maximum $10,000. |

Goodbye, Police Academy
ADVERTISEMENT
The Police Academy at Thomson Road, a Singapore institution for 76 years, will close its doors at the end of this year.
It will be relocated to new premises at the Home Team Academy in Choa Chu Kang early next year.
On Saturday, retired police officers were back at their old stomping ground to mark the closing of the Academy.
For retired police officers Muthu Veran and Madavy Nair, it's not just a walk down memory lane.
It's also a walk down lover's lane because it was at the Police Academy that they met and fell in love.
After a year's courtship, the two instructors got married in 1976.
They hold the distinction of being the first and only couple in Singapore to have held their wedding at the Police Academy at Thomson Road.
Madavy Nair said: "We were not earning much, and our director of Police Academy, Eugene Wong, was very nice. He told us not to worry about the money, saying 'we can provide you the chairs, tables, the hall is free, everything is free, but you pay for the food and the cleaners, which was $20'."
Since then the Academy has become a second home for Muthu and Madavy, whose daughter also grew up on the grounds as well and who later became an officer herself.
Madavy Nair said: "My daughter actually grew up here at the academy. When she was in Primary 1, we didn't have a maid. During lunch hour, I'd bring her to PA and I put her here and she would do her home work, eat at the canteen and she'll run around here and after work I will fetch her back."
Built in 1929, the Academy has seen generations of Police recruits going through their training.
Old photos are the only reminders of a time long forgotten.
From the days when policemen wore shorts until the present day, the grounds at the Academy have also gone through many upgrades.
Ong Boon Chye, retired chief drill instructor, said the 'most significant' upgrade was the swimming pool.
He recalled that before the swimming pool was built in the 1970s, training was conducted elsewhere, at Mount Emily.
After the pool was built, trainees could train within the Academy grounds. - CNA/ir |

HARAP RESTORAN TEPAK SIREH UTAMA BUDAYA, BAIKI LAYANAN
Saya terpaksa memanggil pelayan agar menambah hidangan nasi, tetapi nasinya tak kunjung tiba.:ketuk::ketuk::ketuk::ketuk:
Saya ingin meminta maaf jika teguran saya kurang disenangi, tetapi ia demi kebaikan.
Saya berharap Restoran Tepak Sireh maju dan terkenal sebagai restoran yang mementingkan adat dan budaya Melayu di samping layanan yang istimewa serta bermutu tinggi.
Noor Hasnah Adam,
Woodlands St 81.
