"American Idol": Adam Lambert, Kris Allen set the pace
Adam Lambert is the show's star. He brought a pulsing, rock sensibility to Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music." Original, Cowell ruled. Like Mick Jagger, Abdul said. Lambert is the most consistent performer in the group; and he gives the most memorable performance each week.
Kris Allen closed the show by playing the piano on "Ain't No Sunshine." He broke out of the pack with a solid, inspiring performance. His best performance, Cowell and Abdul agreed.
Still, Lambert towers over them all. You're watching the birth of a star, America.

Want to know Adam Lambert's little secret? You speak. He listens.
Let us explain. You see, Adam, the funky-haired rocker from San Diego, has a penchant for Googling himself. He told us so at the top 13 party a few weeks back. Well, a source behind the scenes at Idol tonight told us that the reason Adam went for the slicked back hairdo for two weeks in a row is because, "he read online how much his fans liked it, and he listens to their opinions."
"The look works for him and the judges like it too," says the source. "I doubt he'll keep it up, though."
Fair enough. We think it's working for him too. Hair aside, Adam's performance of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" was the crowd favorite of the night and garnered the loudest applause.

Back in the early days of American Idol, theme nights were fairly simple. Country, Rock, R&B and so forth. As the show grew in scale and popularity, the producers became a bit more creative, reaching what I feel was the zenith with the spectacular Lennon & McCartney night of last season, easily the single best overall night in Idol抯 now eight-season run.
So what the heck has happened this season? With the exception of last week抯 Motown theme, this season has had some very unwieldy themes that have left most of the contestants rather befuddled. It was capped (so far) with Tuesday night抯 搈ost popular songs downloaded from iTunes |
