Shuttlers have the chance to repeat achievement of the 2006 Games
UNSEEDED pair Koo Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui earned a shot at winning a first-ever Commonwealth Games mixed doubles title for Malaysia whose shuttlers stayed on course to repeat a four-gold medal haul achieved at the 2006 Melbourne Games after the semi-finals matches at the Siri Fort Stadium last night.
World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei stormed into the men’s singles final after beating Chetan Anand of India 21-11, 21-12.
And England’s second seed Rajiv Ouseph, who beat local hope Kashyap Parupalli 19-21, 21-12, 21-18, stands his his way to claim the gold medal for a second successive time.
It will also be a battle between the top two seeds in the women’s singles. Wong Mew Choo fended off a fighting Elizabeth Cann of England 21-12, 18-21, 21-17 while top seed Saina Nehwal brushed aside Susan Egelstaff of Scotland 21-10, 21-17.
But all eyes will be on whether Kien Keat-Eei Hui will be able to deliver a surprise gold medal for Malaysia in the mixed doubles final tomorrow.
The duo lived dangerously before finally prevailing 19-21, 21-16, 21-18 over third seeds Triyachart Chayut-Yao Lei of Singapore in the semi-finals.
They will take on England’s top seeds Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork, who prevented Asian champions Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying from securing an-all Malaysian battle for the gold medal.
Peng Soon-Liu Ying were on the brink of victory when leading 20-18 in the decider but allowed their opponents to save two match points to pip them to a place in the final with a 19-21, 21-13, 23-21 victory in 59 minutes.
Kien Keat-Eei Hui had beaten the Singapore pair in straight games in the semi-final tie of the mixed team competition last week but found it harder to contain their rivals yesterday.
“I am partnering Kien Keat in a competition for the first time and we only trained once a week for three weeks before coming to New Delhi,” said Eei Hui.
“We hope to give a better account of ourselves in the final. I have a gold medal (mixed team) and I hope to get another one on Thursday.”
Eei Hui was the mixed doubles silver medallist with Chew Choon Eng from the 2002 Manchester Games. And that was the only time a Malaysian pair went on the podium in Commonwealth Games mixed doubles badminton.
But having assured themselves of at least the silver, Kien Keat-Eei Hui will be looking to go one better.
Kien Keat came close to winning a mixed doubles medal partnering Wong Pei Tty at the Melbourne Games, losing in the playoff for the bronze.
Kien Keat later partnered Tan Boon Heong to beat Hendra Wijaya-Hendri Kurniawan Saputra of Singapore 21-11, 21-8 in a men’s doubles semi-finals.
The world championship runners-up will play against English second seeds Nathan Robertson-Anthony Clark for the gold medal.
Malaysia’s four gold medals at the 2006 Games came from the men’s singles and doubles, women’s doubles and mixed team.
