Khim Wah and partner Peng Soon earn last minute entry into world meet
KUALA LUMPUR: National doubles shuttler Lim Khim Wah is thanking his lucky stars – for the second time – after earning a last minute entry into the World Championships which will be held in Wembley from Aug 8-14.
And the 22-year-old Khim Wah is ready to play the role as a spoiler in his debut.
The energetic Khim Wah and former partner Chan Peng Soon had been on the reserve list for the world meet and due to several withdrawals the World Badminton Federation (BWF) had extended an invitation to them last week.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have given them an immediate greenlight to join two other pairs – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How – for the world meet.
Like Khim Wah-Peng Soon, Zakry-Thien How also did not make it on merit for the world meet. They were chosen ahead of former internationals and Apacs-sponsored Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen because the BAM felt that their shuttlers had a better chance of doing well.
Great opportunity: Lim Khim Wah is thankful he will get a chance to play in his first World Championships.
As for a happy Khim Wah, this is second big break in his career since joining the BAM four years ago.
He had also earned a surprise call-up in the mixed doubles event with Wong Pei Tty for the 2008 Super Series Masters Finals and both surprised everyone when they defied the odds to reach the semi-finals.
“This is the second time that I have been lucky. The Super Series Masters Finals was my first major event and now I have been given a chance to compete in my first world championships. I am so excited,” he said.
“It certainly came as a surprise as Peng Soon and I have not been playing together since March. In fact, we have dropped to the world 37th position in the world rankings.”
The BAM split the partnership of Peng Soon-Khim Wah after the duo’s second round defeat at the Swiss Open in March.
The coaches decided that it was best for Peng Soon to concentrate on his mixed doubles partnership with Goh Liu Ying ahead of the next year’s London Olympic Games while Khim Wah was given Goh Wei Shem as a regular partner.
Khim Wah was not disheartened with the break-up and over the past five months, he showed steady progress with Wei Shem. Currently, they are the best back-up pair under the charge of national coach Tan Kim Her.
Kim Wah said that he and Peng Soon will give their best at the world meet.
“My best performance with Peng Soon was winning the Thailand Open title in 2009. It was our first Open title and we know each other’s game well. I want to gain as much as experience as possible with him,” said Khim Wah.
“Our top pair at the world meet is Koo and Tan and they are depended on for medals. We will do our best to create one or two upsets to make their path easy. We will certainly go all out to give everyone a run for their money,” he said.
On his future with Wei Shem, Kim Wah said: “Wei Shem and I are ranked 65th in the world. We have been doing great and I hope to stay together with him. The experience in the world meet will certainly help me to be better and I can transfer all my experiences to improve my partnership with him after the world meet.”
For the record, Malaysia came very close of ending their men’s doubles title drought in the world meet last year when Kien Keat-Boon Heong reached the final but the duo ran out of steam against China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng.
