Lochte caps smashing week with four records
MANCHESTER: Six world records were washed away in a final deluge at the world short-course swimming championships on Sunday as the count reached 18 after five hectic days.

Ryan Lochte of the US claimed his fourth world record and fourth gold medal but lost his 200m backstroke crown and was denied a winning exit as Russia upstaged the Americans in the concluding 4x100m medley relay.

But the US topped the medal table with 10 gold medals, with two on the last day from Nathan Adrian in the 100m freestyle and Lochte in the 100m individual medley.

Lochte, who had lost his 200m backstroke title and world record to Austria's Markus Rogan barely half an hour earlier, bounced back in the 100m medley and swept through in 51.15 to slice 0.10 from the world mark he had set in Saturday's semi-finals.

Delighted: Ryan Lochte of the US celebrates after winning gold in the men抯 100m individual medley at the world short-course championships in Manchester on Sunday.

'Space-suit' controversy rages on

Olympic 400m champion Laure
Manaudou of France

PARIS: Speedo's record-breaking suit may have got the backing of swimming's world governing body but it has caused a tidal wave of controversy as athletes battle to book their spot in the Beijing Olympics.

The choice is clear -- risk wearing a swimsuit that might be slower than your competitors, or break with your sponsor and bid for Olympic gold wearing Speedo's LZR Racer.

Since it was introduced in February, 19 long-course world records have been set, all but one of those by a swimmer wearing the LZR.

Olympic 400m champion Laure Manaudou of France and Italy's 100m freestyle world champion Filippo Magnini are just two swimmers who are with rival sponsors Arena.

Laure was reduced to tears on Monday after suffering her first defeat in the 400m in four years at the French national championships, although she still qualified for the Olympics.
The 21-year-old finished just third in the event which she won gold at the Athens Games, for her first defeat over her favourite distance since June 2004.

"I can only say one thing, I'm waiting for the new Arena suit," said Laure afterwards.

But Camelia Potec of Romania was also wearing an old style Arena suit as she blew away the two-time world champion over the distance, as was Italy's Federica Pellegrini when she broke Laure's world record last month.

Nevertheless the fear of missing out on an Olympic berth has lead some hopefuls to consider jumping ship.

French sprinter Fabien Gilot, one of the leading rivals of world record holder, and compatriot, Alain Bernard in the 100m freestyle, has already made up his mind what he will do.

"I didn't work hard to be beaten by equipment," said the Frenchman who is also bidding to clinch a place for Beijing during the French Championships in Dunkirk this week.

"I'm not training to be second. Today I'm swimming in Arena. But I won't lie to you, maybe tomorrow I'll line out in the semi-final, the heats or the final in something else.

"If I'm second or even if I don't take a place in the 100m at the Olympic Games by some hundreds of a second and ahead of me is a Tyr or Speedo suit maybe I'll regret it (swimming in Arena)."

Gilot said he was prepared to risk a fine. "I'm not Laure Manaudou. I don't have a contract which is worth millions. If tomorrow I decide to swim in Tyr or in Speedo, with my club we're ready for the legal battle. I earn E4,500 (RM22,500) a year with Arena. If they want it back that won't change my life."

The French swimming federation last week reluctantly gave their go ahead for competitors to wear the LZR Racer at nationals as it would have been "legally impossible" to ban competitors from wearing it.

Some had argued the suit broke FINA rules because it combines a polyurethane layer with a layer of normal fabric.

"It's true that the inability of certain partners to supply equipment to athletes creates unfair situations regarding performance and that bothers me a lot," said French swimming chief Claude Fauquet.

But he added: "We'll organise that after the French Championships our equipment partners will make sure that all the swimmers have high-performance equipment." -- AFP

Kitajima vows to give his all

TOKYO: Double Olympic gold medallist Kosuke Kitajima (pic) vowed on Monday to devote himself 100 per cent to retaining his breaststroke titles in Beijing in August.

The 25-year-old on Saturday set a national 200 metres record of two minutes, 8.84 seconds while qualifying for the Japanese team to go to the Games. He also won the 100m in 59.67s to earn the right to represent his country in Beijing in that event, the Japan Swimming Federation announced.

But he said he was not satisfied with his performance in the 100m, complaining that "heavy pressure" kept him from setting a national record.

"It was disappointing that I couldn't in the 100 metres, because I came into the championships thinking I was in really good form. In the Olympics, I'm determined to swim my 100 per cent," he said.

But Japanese Olympic swim coach Yoji Suzuki was cautious, warning that the world's top swimmers were much faster than in previous years.
"It will be a really tough competition. It will be difficult to reach the finals. Hopefully, we can win more medals than we did in Athens," Suzuki said.

Japan won eight swimming medals at Athens four years ago, including Kitajima's brace, putting them third after the United States and Australia.

Of the 31-strong squad for Beijing, eight have Olympic experience.

Among them is Athens bronze medallist Reiko Nakamura, who beat Hanae Ito in the women's 200m backstroke at the national championships on Sunday. However, Hanae had managed to beat Reiko on Thursday to win the 100m.

"I was slower in the 100 metres final than in the semi-finals and heats, so I was very disappointed. I tried not to make the same mistake in the 200 metres. I want to win a better-coloured medal in Beijing," said Reiko, 25.

But Hanae was delighted to make her Olympic debut, saying: "I watched the national team on TV four years ago. I'm happy that I'm among them this time."

Athens Olympic bronze medallists Yuko Nakanishi also earned two tickets to the Olympics in the women's butterfly with Yuka Kato and Natsumi Hoshi. -- AFP
