Merlin: Wishlist for Series 4 and 5Merlin: Wishlist for Series 4 and 5
At the beginning of series 4 I made a short wish-list over the things I'd like to see happen in the forthcoming episodes.
Wishlist for season 4 (revisited)
* A return to the Merlin/Arthur bromance that we haven't seen since S1. No more abuse disguised as comedy.
Thankfully, I don't recall Arthur throwing any heavy objects at the back of Merlin's head this series, though at times the writers tipped the tables too far in the opposite direction, with Merlin abusing his power in order to manipulate or humiliate Arthur. Trying to embarrass him in front of Mithian? Stripping him of his free-will and making him prance around the countryside in a peasant's outfit that was too small? Yanking his pants down in front of the entire court so you could retrieve a key from his belt? Demanding a piggy-back ride when he's obviously stressed about his DYING FATHER? Not cool dude.
It's a shame, because it started out quite well, with Arthur vocally appreciating and praising Merlin several times, and even going for a hug when he thought he was dead - but then it just regressed back to the usual patterns. I really don't think I can muster up any sort of interest in their friendship until the Magical Reveal, because nothing between them will ever grow or change in any meaningful way until it happens.
* No more smirky Morgana. I fear it's too late to get back her personality, so at least make her a viable threat.
Well, Katie McGrath obviously got the memo about the smirk, because I only noticed it a couple of times this season. Though I certainly think that the characterization of Morgana was an improvement on last season (she got some definitive wins: Uther's death, Gwen's exile) and a few moments of depth (her numb, baffled reaction to Uther's death, her saddened, thoughtful demeanour with Lancelot, her odd "impersonal obsession" with Guinevere), her characterization is SO far away from what it could be, that being grateful for these handful of scenes makes me feel like Oliver Twist standing before writers, asking: "please sirs, can I have some more" and getting only gobsmacked expressions in return.
No, you CAN'T have any more.
* No more violins, no more "great king" speeches. Let Gwen have a storyline that doesn't involve her love interests, allows her to utilize her own special skills, and has her come out the hero of the day.
Sigh. As with Morgana, we got some good moments for Guinevere, but the writers still can't seem to fathom the idea of giving her an episode to herself. With a few brights spots in the first half of the season (arguing on behalf of the refugees; clocking Merlin round the head with a pitcher), she was mostly relegated to supportive love interest or background noise. She came more into focus in the second half, only to be mind-raped, slut-shamed, exiled, dressed as a harem girl, turned into a deer and then taken back by Arthur because he felt sad.
And I don't recall her doing an blacksmithing this series.
* Some indication that Gwen and Elyan are in fact siblings.
Hah! I think he told her to shut up in one episode and then glared at her in another, and that was it. Was there a ever point to making them siblings at all? Then again, I shouldn't be surprised given the show's equal lack of interest in Arthur/Morgana's relationship.
* A personality/backstory for Percival. Seriously, who is this guy?
Well, they snuck in a quick line that was cut from "The Coming of Arthur" that explained his family was killed by Cenred's men, but since I'd already seen it, I'm still left wondering who he is and where he came from. Even his personality was a little skewered - they set him up as the gentle giant in "The Darkest Hour" with the kids, but then in "The Herald of a New Age" he was wily enough to calm Elyan down with talk of friendship before punching him in the face.
* Lots of BFFery between Lancelot/Merlin and Merlin/Gwen (including one on-screen Merlin/Gwen hug).
Yay, I finally got my hug! In fact, I was pretty happy with what I saw between these three (despite the tragedy of what happened to Lancelot). The dynamics between Merlin/Lancelot/Gwen make up my favourite relationships on the show, and I wasn't disappointed by how sweet and lovely they all were together. Damn, I'm going to miss Lancelot.
* Lots of interaction between Gwaine and Lancelot. In general I'm looking forward to seeing the knights interact, but the fact that these two are such total opposites gets me excited about how they might relate to one another and how they'll work together. It could be hilarious.
DAMMIT! Cold consolation is the fact that NONE of the knights or their relationships got any screen-time with each other.
* Hunith. She and Merlin need a long overdue conversation about Balinor.
Well, I never actually expected to see Hunith again, so I should be amazed and delighted that the writers even remembered her existence; but again, the reason I wanted her to turn up was so that we could get payoff for Merlin meeting Balinor at the end of series 2. Has he told her he met his father? Has he informed her of his death?
* Mordred. (If Asa Butterfield is busy, kidnap him or recast an older kid - it has been three years since we saw him last).
Bummer.
* Satisfactory comeuppance for Uther, the Dragon and Gaius - all three of them have it coming to varying degrees.
Well, Uther bit the dust, so that was nice. Unfortunately (depending on how you look at it) he died a hero's death, but fortunately (depending on how you look at it) it was after a year's worth of wasting away over a broken heart. Okay, I guess my feelings on Uther are rather complex, because I'm not entirely sure how the show expects me to feel about him. I mean, he's a liar and a hypocrite, but I always admired him for being a complex character - and for being played by Anthony Head.
I guess I felt that there should be more retribution for some of the things he'd done over the years - to Morgana, to those who practiced magic, to the drowned children, even to Arthur and Gwen, not in the sense that he should be punished, but simply that his crimes should be acknowledged and discussed. The closest we ever got was Arthur saying: "You can't blame me for my father's sins." Uther caused so many people so much physical and psychological pain, yet there was no exploration of any of this, not even in retrospect, with Arthur explicitly deciding that his father's techniques were wrong (and I'm still not sure where we stand on the whole "Igraine was killed by magic at Uther's behest" deal).
Instead Uther was eventually taken out by an assassin who wasn't even gunning for him (because the writers knew that saving his son's life is exactly how he would have wanted to go out) and a magical necklace put there by a guest-star whose motives we never learnt. Looking at it that way, I suppose Uther's death was an appropriate blend of grandeur and banality.
As for Gaius and the Dragon, I'm pretty sure that the writers would just like us to forget that the former was compliant in the Purge and drugged Morgana for years, whilst the latter manipulated circumstances to harm Merlin's mother, condemned Morgana without cause, and attacked Camelot, resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent people.
I suppose Gaius's transgressions were touched upon briefly in "The Secret Sharer", but between him and the Dragon, I still think that Merlin isn't getting his advice from a particularly good source.
I gritted my teeth when Merlin commended Kilgarrah in "The Darkest Hour" as a wise mentor. NO, Merlin. He's NOT. He's a very powerful and capricious being who cares for nothing except Destiny at whatever cost and is only kept under control because he's YOUR tool - one who can still manipulate you to his own ends, as seen in "Aithusa" when he used your affection for your father against you.
At this point, all I'm hoping for is a sense of fallibility in Kilgarrah when the truth (whatever that may be) about Aithusa comes out.
* A female warrior who isn't evil.
Isolde, who was promptly killed off. Doesn't count.
* A female witch who isn't evil.
The Vilia, who were CGI bubbles in a lake. Doesn't count.
* A story-arc. Continuity. Pay-off.
HAH! There were three story-arcs this season: the search for Emrys, Arthur becoming a wise and just king, and the Love Triangle. None of them were wrapped up in a particularly satisfying way, but then - I've been over this.

Wishlist for season 5
* A Gwen-centric episode
For the love of all that's good in the world, GIVE THE GIRL AN EPISODE ALREADY. If I have to sit through two episodes of Uther's troll wife and three pointless, only-marginally-more-interesting-than-watching-paint-dry episodes chronicling Gaius's guilty conscience, old girlfriend, and goblin possession, I honestly cannot fathom why they can't give the DAMN QUEEN OF CAMELOT a story to herself.
PLEASE writers, it's not that difficult. If it helps, picture her as one of the knights having an adventure or facing a challenge or making a mistake and trying to fix it, and then simply change the name on the script to "Gwen." It won't hurt. I promise.
If you deny me this, I swear I'm only going to watch season 5 for the sake of Guinevere's new wardrobe.
* Gaius's death
Um, yeah. Sorry Richard, nothing personal. But I think that it's time for this character to be laid to rest. 99% of his screentime this season was simply to spout exposition and with Merlin only one season away from becoming the great Merlin of legend, he seems rather superfluous at this point. More importantly, it's well past time for Merlin to grow out of his mentors and become his own man, making his own decisions, and not being guided or manipulated in any way by either Gaius or the Dragon.
I suspect there will be some sort of reckoning between Merlin and the Dragon when whatever the writers have planned for Aithusa is revealed, but until then, I think Gaius needs to go. It doesn't even need to be a sacrificial death: just a quiet, peaceful passing in the night.
The fact that Morgana's premonition of Guinevere's coronation (in which Gaius was clearly present) has been fulfilled, as well as some of Gaius's words about death approaching whilst he was locked up in "The Sword in the Stone" makes me suspect that this may very well be what's on the cards.
* A coda for Lancelot
I think the thing I'm dreading most - more so than if the whole Love Triangle is never again mentioned throughout the entirety of series 5 - is if it IS brought up by Arthur (man, I can SO see him throwing the affair in Gwen's face during a domestic tiff) and neither Guinevere nor Lancelot are ever exonerated.
And it would be nice to see Santiago as Lancelot one more time, even if it's just in some sort of spirit form, aka Freya.
* More references from Arthurian legends
I think that the writers have ticked most of the important boxes; I think the only one that's missing is the creation of the Round Table. It would also be nice to learn more about Avalon, and for Excalibur to finally be named as such.
* A female witch who isn't evil; a female warrior who isn't evil
Still waiting. In the former case, I wouldn't even mind if it involved bringing back Freya and/or Alice, or in the latter, if Guinevere was given sword-fighting lessons on-or-off-screen. That's how desperate I am.
But this show fails the Bechdel test miserably, and boy does Gwen NEED a female friend who wasn't around for the whole Lancelot fiasco and so doesn't have an opinion on it. Basically, Gwen needs someone who was what she was to Morgana in season 1. There was a rumour that a new female character would turn up this year - an archer called Dierdre who would act as Gwen's body-guard, but she never materialized. Boo.
* No more guest stars
When you add up the minutes on this show, you'll find that the one-shot guest stars (when counted as a single entity) take up a HUGE amount of screen-time. I'd go so far to say that any one of them, be it Queen Annis, Princess Mithian, Helios or Alator ended up getting better characterization than any one of the knights, sans Lancelot. Furthermore, it sucks that so much time and energy (and decent writing) is spent on characters that we'll never see again once they've served their purpose.
So for series 5, if the writers can't bring themselves to focus on what are meant to be their main characters, can't we at least ultilize characters that we already know? Several of them have been nicely set up for a return: Gilli, Princess Elena, Alvarr, Freya, Talisin, Mordred, Mithian, Annis, Alator - let's have these guys return instead of constantly ushering in new faces.
