Chong Wei is a major contributor to athletes’ welfare fund
KUALA LUMPUR: World number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei has contributed more than RM300,000 to the National Athletes Welfare Foundation (YAKEB) in the past two years.
Chong Wei said he reserved 50% of incentives received from the government and corporate sponsors and channeled it to YAKEB.
“This year I won seven big tournaments. Including the win at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, it will be eight and I will not forget to contribute towards YAKEB.
“If we can afford it, we should not forget the sacrifices of our former athletes because when we retire maybe there will be others who will help us when we are in need,” he told reporters at the 1Malaysia gathering of former and current athletes, organised by YAKEB at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here yesterday.

Chong Wei, Kien Keat - Boon Heong avoid bogeymen
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1s Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have received favourable draws for their bid to make a historic double sweep for Malaysia in Asian Games badminton.
In the draw released by the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) on Saturday, Chong Wei and his nemesis, Lin Dan of China, are in different halves of the draw in the men’s singles competition.
And defending champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong cannot meet their bogeymen, Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, before the final.
The Guangzhou Games men’s singles competition promises to be an interesting affair with the top two seeds, Chong Wei and Lin Dan, gunning for a first individual gold medal in the Asiad.
Chong Wei has in his quarter of the draw China’s Chen Jin, South Korean Lee Hyun-il and Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro. Also in the half is Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.
in the other half with Lin Dan are defending champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, South Korean Park Sung-hwan, Japan’s Kenichi Tago, India’s P. Kashyap and Malaysia’s Mohd Hafiz Hashim.
Hafiz is expected to play the winner of the match between Tago and Sung-hwan in the second round and may find it hard to clear the early rounds.
“They are favourable draws for our players,” said the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) coaching and training chairman, Ng Chin Chai.
“The main challengers for Chong Wei and Kien Keat-Boon Heong will not be in their paths, at least until the semi-finals. We hope that they will take their chances well.
“Our players are doing well after the disappointment at the Thomas Cup Finals (in May). They did well at the world championships (in Paris) and the Commonwealth Games (in New Delhi). We hope they can end their year with a bang at the Asiad.”
Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who lost to Cai Yun-Hai Feng in the world championship final and also at the Japan Open last month, will be out to exact sweet revenge over the Chinese pair.
But to make the final, they have to overcome several top pairs, among them Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea, Fang Chieh-min-Lee Sheng-mu of Taiwan, Mohd Ahsan-Alven Yulianto of Indonesia and China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen.
In the other half with Cai Yun-Haifeng are heavyweights and second seeds Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia, South Korean Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae, Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa and Malaysian youngsters Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong.
After looking at the draws, Chin Chai said that Malaysia would be looking at winning three medals.
“Our hope is to win one gold and two medals of any colour in Guangzhou. The gold can come from the men’s singles, men’s doubles or the men’s team events,” he said.
Malaysia are the second seeds in the men’s team event. They will take on Thailand in the quarter-finals and play against South Korea or Japan in the semi-finals. Defending champions China are expected to play against Indonesia in the other semi-finals.
In the absence of Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, Malaysia have virtually no hope to get among the medallists in the women’s events.
Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Kien Keat-Woon Khe Wei are also n the mixed doubles but they are not expected to go far.

Azizul and Boon Heong vow to make breakthrough in the Olympics
KUALA LUMPUR: Cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang and shuttler Tan Boon Heong revisited their vows to make a breakthrough in the Olympic Games after being chosen as the special ones to benefit from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) scholarship.
Yesterday, Azizul, Boon Heong and three others – badminton’s Koo Kien Keat and Lee Chong Wei and athletics’ P. Yuvaraaj – were named as the recipients of the scholarship to help athletes qualify for the 2012 London Games and win honours for their countries.
They will each receive US$1,000 monthly until they qualify for the Games.
On top of that, their national associations will be given US$5,000 to help fund the athletes’ training programmes and competitions.
Azizul said that he had put behind the painful episode at the recent Commonwealth Games in New Delhi to continue a pursuit for excellence in cycling.
Azizul finished in first place in the keirin race, ahead of compatriot Josiah Ng, Azizul. But he was disqualified for making a dangerous sprinting move.
“To lose the gold medal in that manner in my first Commonwealth Games was painful. But I have erased it from my memory,” he said.
“I am all motivated again to achieve my ultimate goal, which is to win a gold medal for Malaysia in the Olympic.”
Boon Heong, who won the Commonwealth Games men’s doubles gold medal with Kien Keat, said that he would stay focused on his mission to win honours at the Olympics.
“This scholarship is a great incentive. It is a timely reminder to all of us of our Olympic dreams,” said Boon Heong.
“For now, my aim is to defend the men’s doubles title at the Guangzhou Asian Games. The draw is good and it is now up to us to give our best.”
Only Azizul and Boon Heong were present during a simple ceremony to announce the recipients of the scholarship under IOC Solidarity Programme at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) yesterday.
