Badminton: Chong Wei now on course to beat his career best nine titles

ALOR SETAR: The fans adore him. The rivals look at him in awe. And the sponsors just love him.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei is enjoying his best years in badminton and with his determination to keep the hot run going for at least one more year, he may nail for Malaysia their first-ever title in the world championships and Olympics.

On Sunday, the 29-year-old Chong Wei captured the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold title – his fifth this year and a 36th career Open title since he went on the international stage in 2002.

His career best season thus far was last year when he nailed a total of nine titles, including the Commonwealth Games individual gold medal. And he is on track to better the record this season.

The fans flock in droves wherever the megastar goes and his opponents have now rated him as a favourite title contender for the world championships in Wembley, London, from Aug 8-14 and also at the Olympics at the same venue next year.

Chong Wei has also finally beaten his nemesis, Lin Dan of China, to nail a major title at the All-England last March.

Chong Wei is bringing joy but it should not cloud a really big fear in Malaysian badminton – the absence of quality men’s singles players coming through to challenge strongly on the international stage.

In the Malaysia Open GP Gold, the poor showing of four elite shuttlers – Tan Chun Seang, Liew Daren, Chan Kwong Beng and Chong Wei Feng – again showed the huge gulf in the standard between the country’s second stringers and Chong Wei.

Said national coach Rashid Sidek: “I have not seen any players as dedicated and as committed as Chong Wei.

“He may be a superstar now but he has not forgotten the basics – to work hard, to take care of his food intake and sleeping habits. He is respectful and has not let success get to his head.

“And my heart aches for the current group of players we have. They are not following in the footsteps of Chong Wei.”

Several back-up shuttlers like Goh Soon Huat, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and Misbun Ramdan Misbun showed progress but whether they will be ready to take over the mantle when Chong Wei retires after the London Olympic Games is a big question mark.

“They need more time,” says coach Hendrawan.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will immediately shift their focus from Alor Setar to their emergency general meeting (EGM) on Saturday to appoint their second deputy president.

But instead of channelling their energy to internal politics, as it always has been, it is high time that they give more focus on the development programme of the game in the country or face the humiliation of serving in an association without quality players.

Thanks to Chong Wei, Maybank are coming in a big way as sponsors to piggy ride on his success and it is learnt that the corporate sector will be pumping in about RM5mil for the BAM’s programme.

The bulk of the money should go to the states to revive their grassroots programmes.

Promises have been made in the past that badminton in schools will get priority but sadly, it has all been an empty gong.
Malaysia certainly do not lack talent or enthusiastic youngsters hoping to make it big. But it is in the BAM neglecting state programmes and the transition group of players from the ages of 18 to 22 that are proving to be costly.

Drastic and radical changes are needed to develop and achieve excellence for Malaysian badminton. Otherwise, the fans and sponsors will be leaving the stage too after Chong Wei quits the game.

China dump Chen Jin and Wang Lin

BEIJING: Reigning world champions Chen Jin and Wang Lin have been dropped from the China squad for the Sudirman Cup mixed team championships.

Chen Jin has been in poor form over the past six months while Wang Lin is still regaining full fitness following a ligament surgery last September.

China selected Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai and Chen Long for their men’s singles line-up for the championships in Qingdao from May 22-29.

With Wang Lin out, the women’s singles line-up has Wang Shixian, Wang Xin and Wang Yihan.

The men’s pairs in the team are veterans Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and the younger Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao while Yu Yang-Wang Xiaoli and Zhao Yunlei-Tian Qing will be the women’s pairs.

For the mixed doubles China opted for Xu Chen-Ma Jin at the expense of Korean Open and Super Series Masters Finals champions Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei.

China chief coach Li Yongbo said that Lin Dan would play in all of his matches as it would help the Olympic and three-time world champion adjust his condition and find his best form on China’s road to retaining the title.

“We have not failed to defend the Sudirman Cup in the last three editions of the championships,” he said at a press conference last Saturday.

“But we faced tremendous difficulties in every match and basically 50% of the matches that we won were very close.

“We will have to be well prepared in the face of adversity, especially when playing against strong teams like Indonesia and Malaysia. We must prepare to the fullest.”

The China team left their base in Beijing for Qingdao on May 2 for their final preparations for the championships.

Chong Wei can now savour Bath stint

LEE Chong Wei's absence from the  stint at the University of Bath last year triggered a controversy but in an about-turn, he has requested for a 10-day training camp to be held there ahead of the World Championships in London on Aug 8-14.

Misbun Sidek, then Chong Wei's coach, and the World No 1 were reluctant to attend the Bath stint as they felt it would be better to train at home before competing in the World Championships in Paris in August.

However, their decision backfired after Chong Wei crashed out in the quarter-finals while men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who attended the Bath camp, reached the final.

Yesterday, national singles coach Rashid Sidek said the request has been approved by the BA of Malaysia (BAM) and that three elite players will accompany Chong Wei to Bath to spar with him.

"The Bath stint will be ideal for Chong Wei as the World Championships will be in London this time and it will be easy for him to acclimatise," said Rashid.

"We have also requested for three players to accompany him as Chong Wei is the only national singles shuttler to qualify for the World Championships and needs quality sparring to be well prepared for the event.

"The training should last for about eight days. The exact dates will be confirmed soon."

Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng and Chan Kwong Beng are expected to be the three shuttlers who will accompany Chong Wei.

Two of them are expected to return when Chong Wei travels to London to train at Wembley Arena where the World Championships will be held for the first time.

Chong Wei has yet to win a major event and the player is serious about earning some respectability in London.

The Bath stint will be coordinated by the National Sports Institute (NSI) where all qualifiers from the national team will be involved in the stint.

Teik Chai-Bin Shen out of world meet despite making the cut

KUALA LUMPUR: In an unprecedented move, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have named Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How as replacements for former national pair Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen for the world championships even though the latter had qualified on merit.

The Apacs and KLRC-sponsored Teik Chai-Bin Shen accepted the decision but felt that the BAM should consider giving them some form of compensation for dropping them from the championships, which will be held in London from Aug 8-14.

It is the first time that BAM have made such decision as previously, they stood by those who qualified on merit.

The BAM secretary, Ng Chin Chai, said yesterday that they named the world No. 27, Zakry-Thien How, based on current form even though the pair did not make the cut when the qualifying period ended two weeks ago.

A country can have a maximum of three pairs if all of them are ranked among the top 24. But Malaysia had two pairs in the bracket – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong (No. 4) and Teik Chai-Bin Shen (No. 16).

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) gave all their members a time frame of two weeks, which ended yesterday, to finalise the names of the qualifiers, taking into consideration that some, who have booked the tickets earlier, could have been injured, retired or suffered a drop in form.

The BAM confirmed that Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Zakry-Thien How would be their two pairs for the championships based on current form.

“The BAM are the controlling national body and we made the decision in the best interest of the nation,” said Chin Chai yesterday.
“We discussed this matter objectively in a meeting with our high performance director (Datuk James Selvaraj) and coaches (Rexy Mainaky and Tan Kim Her) yesterday. We felt that the inclusion of Zakry and Thien How was justified.

“In the last six months, Zakry-Thien How have achieved better results than Gan-Bin Shen and other national pairs to prove that they are currently the second best pair in the country.

“They reached the quarter-finals of two Super Series event – the Malaysia Open and All-England.”

In the men’s singles, the BAM gave the green light to former national player Wong Choong Hann, now a Dunlop-sponsored competitor, to join world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the championships.

“Choong Hann qualified on merit by virtue of being the world number 16th player. We are sending him because the standard of other singles players are far from him,” said Chin Chai.

Teik Chai was disappointed but was resigned to the fact they could not challenge the decision of the national body.

“But what do we say to our sponsors? Our sponsors funded all our trips to tournaments. We repaid their faith in us by qualifying for the world meet,” he said.

“Now, the BAM are telling us that we cannot go. It feels unfair because the world meet had kept us going. They should have told us (about the possibility of not being selected) a year before we even started our journey to qualify.

“I hope the BAM will look into ways to compensate us. They should make up for our losses. We hope that they will be fair to us.”

Meanwhile, Chin Chai said that they had decided to name Tee Jing Yi as a replacement for Wong Mew Choo in the women’s singles. Mew Choo has retired from competitions and started her job as the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) coach.

The world championship-bound squad will spend 10 days at Bath University in England before heading for the world meet.

Joint-training found effective

THE joint-training session between the men's elite and back-up doubles squads will be continued on a long-term basis as the players have been showing good improvement since it started three months ago.
Although top combination Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong's slow progress has been of their own doing, the rest, especially the back-up pairs, have been performing better in tournaments.

The idea was initially mooted by Rexy Mainaky to help check Kien Keat-Boon Heong's slide and the request was accepted by back-up coach Tan Kim Her, who is happy that most of his players are gaining from the arrangement.

Kim Her said it didn't only boost the morale of his players but also put the other elite pairs like Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock and Zakry Latif-Hoon Thien How on their toes due to the competition.

"Generally, all the pairs have gained from the joint-training and I am happy to see the back-up pairs showing decent progress since getting regular opportunities to play with Kien Keat-Boon Heong," said Kim Her.

"Other elite pairs are also pushing hard in training as the younger combinations are fast catching up and this is a win-win situation for both squads.

"As far as we (Rexy and Kim Her) are concerned, this arrangement will continue for a longer period as it helps to bridge the gap between the elite and back-up pairs and will eventually bring better results on the international stage."

Back-up pairs Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah were initially recognised as the back-up pairs to spar with Kien Keat-Boon Heong but the other combinations are also involved in joint-training regularly.

Wei Shem-Khi Wah, who have only played only three tournaments, reached the semi-finals of the New Zealand International Challenge and the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships last month,

They won the Kuala Lumpur Open which involved all the top national pairs.

Another pair Lutfi Zaim Khalid-Vountus Indra Mawan, who have been part of the elite squad due to their attacking qualities, have also made progress and beat Olympic champions Markis Kido-Henda Setiawan of Indonesia in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold last week.

Even former junior champions Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming have also impressed as they beat Kien Keat-Boon Heong in the KL Open and defeated Thailand's No 1 Songphon Anugritayawon-Sudket Prapakamol in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold.

However, the focus of the joint-training is to see Kien Keat-Boon Heong regain their form and confidence and there is some hope after they won the Malaysia Open last week.

Kien Keat has already vowed to change their attitude while Boon Heong wants to train harder.

Gan gets no answer from BAM on being dropped from world meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Gan Teik Chai went to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) office yesterday to seek an answer. But all he got was a cold shoulder and still no clarification why he and partner Tan Bin Shen were dropped from the world championships in London from Aug 8-14.

“There was no official to explain why the decision was taken. Instead, I was given a letter saying our services were not required,” said a dejected Teik Chai. “ They didn’t even have the courtesy to tell us why we were dropped. We only found out the decision through the media.”

Teik Chai and Bin Shen, who are sponsored by Apacs and KLRC, are currently ranked 16, making them eligible to join Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in the championships. Instead, the BAM sidestepped them and named Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Hoon Thien How to play in London.

Teik Chai said that he was disappointed with the way BAM handled the matter.

“I am really hurt. They do not even respect us, the players,” said Teik Chai.

“I want to know why we were dropped. They say it was done in the best interests of the nation. But what does that mean?.

“They named (Wong) Choong Hann for the world meet. I am not against him but he is 34 years old and on the verge of retiring. Why did the BAM not name a younger player to replace him? There is a double standard here.

“There is something wrong with their system. If the BAM really wanted their players to qualify, then they should have put in a more concerted effort and proper planning to help them qualify. Why take our place? We have worked very hard to win this ticket. It is not easy to train as independent players. We also need to find our own sponsors to fund all our trips.

“The BAM are not being fair to us. I am going to fight for my rights. They cannot just take our place like this,” added Teik Chai.

Teik Chai, however, conceded that the BAM have the final say on the participation of the local players in all Badminton World Federation (BWF) sanctioned tournaments.

“There must be proper communication. Tell us what is happening and there must be some form of compensation for omitting us from the world championships,” said Teik Chai.
