Malaysia must beat Denmark to avoid China in last eight

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei sees no other way but to beat Denmark in Group C for a safe passage into the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan from May 20-27.

By being the group champions, Malaysia will be seeded joint third-fourth in the elimination round and avoid heavy favourites China in the quarter-finals.

“We must defeat Denmark and become the group champions. The Danes are not too strong and I believe that we have a 50-50 chance against them.

“Our target is to reach at least the last four,” said Chong Wei.

Malaysia have a relatively weak team this time out but the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have stood firm with their top-four target. Two years ago, Malaysia were whipped 3-0 by China in the semi-finals in KL.

Malaysia are in Group C with Denmark and South Africa. Only the top two teams in each of the four groups will get to play in the elimination round.

A fresh draw will be conducted and all the group champions will be given a new seeding based on the May 17 world rankings.
China and South Korea are expected to be seeded first and second while Malaysia and Japan should be the joint third-fourth seeds.

However, if Malaysia lose to Denmark, they could face any of the four seeded teams in the last eight.

The others in the team are Liew Daren, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Chong Wei Feng and doubles pairs Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong.

Denmark will be spearheaded by their evergreen veteran Peter-Gade Christensen, Jan O Jorgensen, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Viktor Axelsen in the singles. The doubles are Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, Jonas Rasmussen-Mads-Conrad Petersen, Mads Pieler Kolding-Joachim Fischer Nielsen.

Chong Wei should overcome Christensen, who seems to be struggling to find his form after an ankle injury.

The matches involving Daren and Hafiz will be close. But former All-England champion Hafiz has a better chance of delivering a point as the third singles.

In the men’s doubles, both Malaysian pairs will up against tough opponents and it could go either way.

In Kuala Lumpur two years ago, Malaysia defeated Denmark 3-2 in the quarter-finals. Hafiz was the hero as he defeated Joachim Persson to clinch the winning point.

dalam kes ini, kkk-tbh masih bernasib baik kerana berjaya duduk di ranking ke 8....

aa'ah dorang tak layak .... sbb ranking bona/ahsan lagi tinggi .... pastu kalau satu2 negara tu nak 2 wakil doubles ke olimpik, dua2 kena top 8 ... sayang missed sikit je ....
sbb tu masa India SS aritu semua peminat kido/setiawan harap kkk/tbh kalah kat 2nd round & jatuh ke ranking ke-9 .... tapi kkk/tbh menang la pulak ngan pair jepun tu

tapi kalau dorang dapat gi olimpik pun , rasanye susah utk dorang mempertahankan pingat mas dorang tu ....

Shuttlers to leave for China without sick Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad will leave for Guangzhou today without skipper and world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

The 29-year-old Chong Wei had been down with flu and will need a couple of days to recover.

Chong Wei and his coach Tey Seu Bock will join the team on Wednesday.

The Malaysians will train in Guangzhou for five days and then board a train to Wuhan for the Finals from May 20-27.

Leaving today are Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and coaches Rashid Sidek, Tan Kim Her and Hendrawan.

Tight schedule: Lee Chong Wei attending a promotional event on Thursday.

Yesterday, Chong Wei skipped the team’s final training session at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara but showed up later to explain about his delayed departure.

Hafiz, who is the most experienced member of the team and had been representing the country since the 2002 edition, said Chong Wei’s absence would not dampen the team’s spirit.

“Chong Wei has not been well over the last few days and we understand that he needs a good rest.

“Although he will not be joining us, the important thing is for him to recover,” said Hafiz.

“Yes, we will be short of one member for the next few days but we will not let it pull the team down. All of us know our responsibilities.

“Our team is not the strongest and now, we have to leave without Chong Wei. It may look as though things are not going our way but we are not going to let it affect our focus,” said Hafiz.

“Maybe, this low profile approach to the tournament may do a world of good to us.

“Malaysia always have a chance in team competitions and we will be out to take our chances well. We may look frail outside but inside we are strong and will be banking on our team spirit to pull through.”

The other five contenders for the Cup are four-time champions China, Indonesia, Denmark, South Korea and Japan.

Despite being under the weather, Chong Wei fulfilled his obligations with his sponsors by attending three back-to-back events over the last three days.

Malaysia are looking at a top four finish in Wuhan.

Rashid: Thomas Cup team can overcome odds if they stick together

SEPANG: The signs have been far from positive but national singles coach Rashid Sidek is not reading too much into the string of mishaps in Malaysia’s final run–up to the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan from May 20-27.

Yesterday, national team manager Datuk Sayed Abu Bakar Abdullah had to miss the flight to Guangzhou with the squad because one of his close relatives had passed away.

Just a day earlier, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei had to delay his trip to China because he was down with a bad cold. He will leave with coach Tey Seu Bock on Wednesday.

Last week, the BA of Malaysia had to switch the planned centralised training from Dongguan to Guangzhou due to several factors that would have prevented them from fully utilising the centre.

Camaraderie had also been lacking as the singles and doubles players had not been training together at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

The idea of leaving early was for the team to have time to bond and be totally united for the battle ahead.

Yesterday, national singles chief coach Rashid, who had been in every Thomas Cup campaign since 1986 — as a player until 2000 and as a coach after that — agreed that there had been several obstacles ahead of this year’s Finals.

“I have been to countless team events but I haven’t seen so many challenges prior to the Finals like this one. Hopefully, things will get better from now on,” said Rashid, before taking an early morning flight to Guangzhou with the rest of the team yesterday.

Others on the flight were Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong; coaches Tan Kim Her, Pang Cheh Chang and Hendrawan; sparring players Misbun Ramdan Misbun, Goh Soon Huat, Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming and a small support team from the National Sports Institute (NSI).

Rashid, who was a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup winning team, hoped that the problems would make the players go the extra mile.

“Our team may not be one of the favourites but that shouldn’t dampen the spirit of the players. We hope that the next few days in Guangzhou will fire up the players to defy the odds. They can overcome the challenges if they stick together,” he said.

Hendrawan, who was in the team when Indonesia won the Cup three times in 1998, 2000 and 2002, hoped the first-timers and sparring partners would learn as much as possible in Wuhan.

“I was a sparring partner for the Indonesian team during the 1994 Finals. The experience gave me the motivation to fight for a slot in the team. Taufik Hidayat was also a sparring partner for the 1998 Finals. I hope all the sparring partners will be inspired to become top players themselves,” said Hendrawan.

On the first-timers, Hendrawan said he would do his best to calm their nerves and inspire them to outdo themselves.
Half the Malaysian team will be making their debut in the world’s premier badminton team event.

They are Daren, Wei Feng, Khim Wah-V Shem and Wee Kiong and hopes are high that they will use the Finals as a platform to make a breakthrough to stardom.
