Severe Russian test awaits our doubles department in Qingdao
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian doubles department will be under serious attack when they play against Russia in their opening Group B tie of the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Qingdao today.
Yesterday, Russia stole a point in the mixed doubles match against Indonesia. The point in their 1-4 defeat came from Vitalij Durkin-Nina Vislova, who beat Fran Kurniawan-Pia Zebadiah Bernadet 24-22, 21-19.
Malaysia coach Rashid Sidek said that they should win the tie against the Russians but warned the players against taking their opponents lightly, especially in the doubles matches.
“They are quite strong in the mixed doubles. The Russian women have also improved and it will not be that easy to beat them,” he said.
In the mixed doubles, Malaysia will bank on Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold runners-up Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Yin to deliver a point.
And in the women’s doubles, Wong Pei Tty has promised that she would go all out with Chin Eei Hui in an expected match against Valeria Sorokina-Vislova.
“I am not at my best but I am slowly making progress. Hopefully, Eei Hui and I will be able to improve on our combination and keep a clean slate here.” All eyes will also be on Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong as the duo have a tendency to lose to lower ranked pairs.
They were almost sent packing by Holland’s Ruud Bosch-Koen Ridder in the semi-finals of the Malaysia GP Gold and they certainly cannot underestimate Vitalij Durkin-Alexandr Nikolaenko today.
It should be a breeze for Lee Chong Wei and Tee Jing Yi in the men’s and women’s singles matches.
