When does the summer transfer window close?

Tuesday, September 1, at 6pm - a day later than you might expect, as the Monday is a Bank Holiday and the window has to close on a working day. Likely to be slightly later in reality, so Jim White can continue shouting for a further few hours as Chris Brunt's proposed loan move to Watford falls through at the last minute.

Is that the same across Europe?
No it is not. France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Holland's closes on Monday 31 August at 23:59. The Dutch summer transfer window tends to open in the second week of June. The Portuguese transfer window stays open until 22 September. The mavericks.

Liverpool valued at almost £540m in latest finance report

Club's value has increased by more than 50% in last two years but still ranked just sixth most valuable in Premier League

Liverpool Football Club is worth around £537m – less than a third of Manchester United, whose £1.8bn makes them by far the most valuable football club in England.

In an article explaining his findings on the Sporting Intelligence site, Dr Markham said it focused on a “fixed set of financial criteria” to establish the market value of clubs, looking at what they earn and what they spend and their assets, to come up with a “rational” value.

The Markham report places Arsenal as the only other Premier League club to come in worth more than £1bn (at £1.1bn) with Manchester City next at £907m, and Chelsea at £826m.

Surprisingly Tottenham’s value is rated at £710m, well ahead of Liverpool’s with Everton ranked down in ninth at £216m.

Speaking to fans about the issue on social media, Dr Markham said Spurs’ position ahead of the Reds was “primarily due to land value, consistent profitability and lack of debt. LFC will rise on stadium completion.”

Summarising Liverpool’s position, he states: “Anfield is badly in need of the revamp ongoing. Liverpool’s corporate offering needs to be improved in scale and every other way to stay on the coattails of the current Champions League clubs. Match-day revenue is less than half of Manchester United and Arsenal.”

That would suggest that the 8,500 extra seats in the current Main Stand expansion need to be followed swiftly by the Anfield Road expansion of another 4,800 seats, which has not yet been fully committed to by the Reds, but which would take capacity up to close to 59,000.

The financial boost from improving that “corporate offering” of course represents the major dilemma facing the Anfield hierarchy and the club’s fan base.

On one side, the need to maximum revenue to compete financially, thereby putting the best team possible on the pitch. On the other the very real concerns of the need to improve the Anfield atmosphere, getting more “real fans” back into the stadium, particularly younger ones, with ticket prices reduced to that effect. It will not be an easy balance to strike.

In terms of growth, United’s is impressive at 74% in the last two years but still can’t keep pace with Manchester City with an astonishing 126%. Chelsea and Spurs’ value has risen by 60% and Liverpool’s by more than 50%.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Things you need to know ahead of tonight's Premier League clash

Monday Night Football is back and it could be a classic as title challengers Arsenal take on Champions League hopefuls Liverpool. At least that is how it was supposed to be, but it is the Merseysiders who head to the Emirates with a 100 per cent record, while Arsenal are still smarting for their opening day defeat at home to West Ham.

Team news

Arsenal: Arsene Wenger expects to pick from the same group of players that he had available for last weekend's 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Jack Wilshere has returned to training but is still not fit enough to play, but Wenger believes Alexis Sanchez will be back to full fitness having not been at his sharpest for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers has a fitness concern over captain Jordan Henderson who was forced off against Bournemouth with a foot injury.

The Reds will give Henderson as long as they can to prove his fitness, and they have no other concerns ahead of the trip to north London.

Predicted sides

Reasons for Liverpool fans to be optimistic
  • The Reds have found some defensive resilience at the start of this season with successive clean sheets against Stoke and Bournemouth
  • Christian Benteke scored his first goal for the club last Monday and looked to be settling into Anfield life pretty well
  • Phillipe Coutinho is having a 2015 to remember and the Brazilian is in magnificent form
