Aaron Kelly – “Fly me to the Moon” – Wait, why does he call Aaron Big Mike? I guess that was a joke. He’s giving Aaron technical advice I’m not sure he understands. This isn’t starting off well. It’s strained. The phrasing is terrible. The kid is out of his depth totally. Please voters, make the madness stop. PLEASE. This is not good. So dull. The kid is such an amateur in every sense of the word. TOO YOUNG to be here. Randy says, “Dude you did a really good job.” SERIOUSLY? Ellen says, “I thought the piano was a little pitchy…I was worried, I can’t believe I didn’t here any country, beautiful vocals.” Kara says, “Not strong compared to last week. I think you’ll be here again, but you need to learn charisma, you still need to get there. You are so close.” Simon says, “I’m with Kara on this one, Frank was the king of cool, if he was a lion, you were just a mouse, no conviction…but people like you after you perform, I’m going to give you that.” |

Casey James – “Blue Skies” – Sit down with Ryan. One of Casey’s friends called him with a gig. The friend had no idea he was on Idol! Casey is a Harry fan! Harry likes his blusey goove. Hm. This is very strange. I really am pulling for Casey, but I don’t think this is working for him. He’s straining on the high notes, and he looks completely uncomfortable up there out of his element. Wow. Yikes. Oh Casey, I think you’re going home. Randy said, “This was your worst performance, you were out of your element. It just didn’t work.” Ellen said, “That felt very stiff to me. I didn’t feel like you were cool or effortless. I agree with Randy.” Kara said, “It took you a while to warm up. At least you held some notes. But the bad thing is that you sound like a lamb ‘bahhhh” your vibrato is out of control” OMG she didn’t! Simon said, “This is really uncomfortable. You weren’t fantastic. I thought you came over a bit embarrassed and a bit uncomfortable. The good news is that you have a booking for next week.” Ouch! Harry says he sang it better in rehearsal. “You killed it about 2 hours ago.” |

Crystal Bowersox – “Summer Wind” – Harry says he felt Crystal’s connection to the song. “There’s nothing I need to tell you,” says Harry. Crystal looks beautiful. OMG Crystal can sing anything. She’s sensational. I LOVE the beginning of this song. (One of my fav Sinatra songs). There are a couple of weird things in the middle, though, and the band drowns her out a bit, but her phrasing is really good. Randy says, “It was a great arrangement, but it was a little sleepy for me.” Ellen says, “It felt like you were swallowing some words, it got better in the second half.” Ellen is impressed with Crystal’s versatility. Kara says, “I kind of liked it. I liked your phrasing. It’s a big thing this week.” Simon says, “I love this song, it felt a little bit indulgent, the second half was a lot better, not one of your strongest performances. Now it’s about being in it to win it.” Hm. I actually liked the beginning better. I thought the band overpowered her. – “I don’t feel like I should be singing really big notes, just because I’m on American Idol”. Simon says, “I’m giving you this advice to help you.” |

This is season on American Idol definitely has it's contenders. Crystal Bowersox should just take her award now and start recording her album. At the same time though, she is predictable and plays it safe week after week. Michael Lynche is a true performer and Lee Dewyze is finally coming out of his shell. Meanwhile Siobhan Magnus needs to stop screaming because she thinks that's what people want to hear. Lee Dewyze, Michael Lynche and Siobhan Magnus are close 2nds behind Crystal Bowersox with phenomenal voices and talent. I just seem to be waiting tirelessly for my "Kris Allen Moment."

Same thoughts here. This season is such a yawn fest. |

Mike Lynche – “The Way You Look Tonight” – Sit down with Ryan: Mike talks about his band back in New York. This is one of Harry’s favorite songs. This is a really good vocal. Absoltutely the best of the night. Mike is swinging–he looks comfortable, he’s totally feeling this song. He takes advantage of Connick’s arrangement. “Unbelievable arrangement, Unbelievable vocal, Mike is in it to win it!” Ellen says, “You seem to have the most comfort on stage, you look the part, very smooth, a lot of charisma” Kara says, “You find the drama in the song, you took us on a journey, you didn’t lose yourself in the song.” Simon says, “This has been a tricky night. The first 3 performances have been OK. With you, that’s all changed. I loved that I felt that you listened, and everyone worked together. It all just clicked. Well done”. Yep. Mike clicked and worked with the band, like another instrument. He got it. |

Is this the worst season of 'American Idol' ever?
By Donna Reynolds
March 29, 2010
Is Season 9 worse than Season 6, which featured Sanjaya Malakar? After last week’s pitiful performance show and the continuing survival of Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia, arguably the two worst remaining American Idol Season 9 contestants, a lot of people, myself included, are beginning to speculate that this may well be the worst season of American Idol to date.
The interesting thing is that when it comes to American Idol, we seem to have very short-term memories! We can recall standout moments from past seasons and remember the truly horrific, but the mediocre moments get lost in our collective memory banks. It's always easy to make these kinds of claims when we are in the thick of the season and previous seasons are but a distant memory.
All this “worst season yet” chatter is ironic for me in that I am putting the finishing touches on This Week in Idol History, a book documenting all the performance shows from the past eight seasons. I’ve been working on this for a couple of years, actually, but only recently felt the need to get it out there mostly as a resource for Idol historians and those who seek to make some historically-based comparisons. The book will be available in hard copy and as an e-book early next month.
In the process of editing my manuscript, I had a chance to reflect on previous seasons and compare them to what I am seeing this year. And, while this season certainly ranks as one of the worst, I’m not convinced it can top American Idol 6, which, in my opinion, offered up some of the worst performances in the history of the show, and the most boring and least successful crop of Idols to date.
Other than Jordin Sparks, who has had a respectable post-Idol career, Season 6 contestants have pretty much faded into obscurity. Melinda Doolittle, who was the best pure vocalist on the show and in my opinion truly robbed of a spot in the Top 2, has been reduced to being the narrator for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Miracle Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN. Her debut album, Coming Back to You, has only sold 53,000 copies in the year since its release.
Runner-up Blake Lewis has released two albums, Audio Day Dream (released December 2007), which sold 305,000 copies and Heartbreak on Vinyl (released October 2009), which has barely hit the 10,000 unit mark.
Season 6 was also the season of Sanjaya Malakar of the bizarre hairdos and ridiculously off key performances. While Randy Jackson thought Paige Miles’ rendition of “Against All Odds” was the worst Idol performance ever, I take exception, pointing out Sanjaya’s “Bathwater,” where he christened the “ponyhawk” and slaughtered the song.
Chris Sligh, who finished tenth, may be one of the more successful contestants from that season in that he parlayed his Idol notoriety into songwriting and realized a huge hit when Rascal Flatts had a chart topper with “Here Comes Goodbye,” a song he co-wrote with Clint Lagerberg.
The Season 6 tour was also the least successful ever in terms of attendance. The tour made $20.9 million and the average number of seats filled was 68.4 percent. Some blamed the weakening economy, but things weren't that much better the next year when the Season 7 tour, featuring David Cook and David Archuleta, bumped gross sales to $29.3 million and fill 85.4 percent of the seats. Season 8 continued the upward trend, grossing $30 million and filling 85.6 percent of the seats.
The Season 5 tour is the most successful ever, grossing $35.2 million and averaging 96% capacity. There's a reason for that. The group featured Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin, Bucky Covington, Mandisa, Kellie Pickler, Ace Young, and Katharine McPhee, who are considered to be the most successful group of Idols in the history of the show. Other seasons have launched star careers, but no season before or since has had the collective success the Season 5 Idols have realized.
Certainly, post-Idol album sales and tour statistics don’t tell the entire story. Season 9 is still in its infancy, and there’s no way to predict how successful the tour will be or who, if anyone, will hit the mark post-Idol. What’s pretty clear, however, is that other than Crystal Bowersox, who is in a league of her own, there are no real standouts this season.
As good as she is, however, Crystal doesn’t bring the kind of excitement to the stage that we've seen in previous years with people like Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, and others. At this point, everyone in this group, with the possible exception of Michael Lynche, lacks stage presence, performing skill, and charisma, a deadly combination. Quite honestly, I can’t imagine sitting through the first half of the American Idols Live concert this year, if I even deign to attend at all. That’s how much this group bores me.
Season 9 marks the end of Simon Cowell’s tenure on the show, and while Idol will go on for at least one more season without him, unless this group really steps it up, I think the show is pretty much done as a ratings powerhouse. For me, watching Idol has become an obligation rather than something I look forward to each week. And that says a lot coming from someone who has watched since the beginning and rarely missed an episode.
Can this season turn itself around? Not unless a couple of these contestants really burst out the showstoppers. Siobhan has potential, but she’s no Adam Lambert. Casey James is a great musician, but he’s no Chris Daughtry or David Cook. Michael Lynche is the best R&B singer the show has ever had, but he’s not grabbing people like Ruben did. Aaron Kelly has youthful appeal and a good voice, but he doesn't come close to David Archuleta. And even Crystal, who may be the most talented contestant ever, doesn’t pull me in like Kelly Clarkson did.
This season, things started going wrong when the Top 12 was decided. The inclusion of Tim Urban and Andrew Garcia in the finals continues to annoy most viewers. Neither of these two should have even been in the Top 24, let alone in the finals. Mullet or not, Alex Lambert was a better singer than either of them.
Lilly Scott should have been there instead of Lacey, and I think she would have made the tour. I also think Katelyn was better than Didi and that she would also still be in the mix. When the wrong people make the cut, things start to go south very quickly!
Unless the season turns itself around soon, I think it might end up surpassing Season 6 as the worst season ever. I hope I’m wrong. In the meantime, I will continue to watch and record my impressions every week, hoping for that moment when the energy and excitement really kick in. We’ll see how that goes!

Lee DeWyze – “That’s Life” – Harry’s wife likes Lee a lot. Harry is a fan too. Harry jokes around with Lee! Lee still needs to work on his pitch. And Lee, Frank would call you on your diction! But, the phrasing here is really good, and Lee is giving the song some swagger. I see some confidence. For someone completely out of his element, he’s doing really well. Randy says, “You know what? Another great arrangement. You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” Ellen says, “At first I was distracted by Harry’s organ. If this was the last night of performances, you would have just won this whole thing.” Kara asks Lee: “Do you think you can win?” Yes says Lee.”You can win this thing.” Simon says, “Harry you’ve been incredible tonight, Harry brought out your personality and confidence. By far the best performance of the night.” I don’t know. Compared to the great performances of past season, it was just a’ight, you know? We are grading on a curve here… |
