Sharapova, Serena advance at Rogers Cup
MONTREAL β Rogers Cup tournament director Eugene Lapierre was disappointed when hometown favourite Eugenie Bouchard lost in her first match, but he said the Canadian Open women's tennis championships will survive the loss.
"We were hoping that Eugenie would do well here, but we still have the best players in the world and they are entertaining players to watch," said Lapierre, noting that the event was on track to beat its WTA attendance record of 175,000 spectators for a week-long tournament.
Two of the most popular players on the women's tour were featured in Uniprix Stadium on Wednesday and they took different routes to the round of 16.
Russia's Maria Sharapova delighted the afternoon crowd with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Garbine Muguruza of Spain while top-seeded Serena Williams crushed Australian Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2 in a 59-minute evening match that was interrupted by a 28-minute rain delay.
The fourth-seeded Sharapova, who is one of the most popular players on the women's tour, got off to a slow start when Muguruza broke her serve in the first game of the match. But Sharapova, whose best result in the Rogers Cup was an appearance in the 2009 final, grew stronger as the match went on.
"She played a very good first set, very aggressive," said Sharapova. "I haven't played (since Wimbledon) and it was good to get this match. I haven't played in Montreal in a while and I'm happy to be here and be healthy."
Sharapova was here two years ago, but a virus sidelined her before she could play her first match. Last edited by ashburn on 7-8-2014 05:38 PM

Members of the 'Genie Army' who traveled to Montreal to cheer on Eugenie Bouchard received housing and tickets from the tournament, according to Canadian press, with WTA CEO Stacey Allaster also saying that the WTA would like to "bring" the group to the WTA Championships in Singapore if Bouchard qualifies for the event. It was unclear if this meant they would be compensated for any expenses.

What you learn from a day with Rafa Nadal
(david vega hernandez @VegaDavid23)
The best possible model. Many of the talented up-and-coming young Spaniards on the ATP tour get the opportunity to practise with one of the best tennis players of all time, Rafa Nadal. One of these players is David Vega (Gran Canaria, España; 1994). The player from the Canary Islands, who this year has reached his best ranking (top-403) under the orders of Toni Colom, is trying to recover from physical problems, like Nadal, so as to return to competition as soon as possible. Just as he did before the final of the Mutua Madrid Open, Vega has been practising with Nadal these past few days. This time it was at the world number two's operations base in Mallorca.
Question. After almost a month without much activity, how's your injury?
Reply. I was sidelined with physical problems and I'm gradually getting back into tone again, seeing how my abdominal responds. Until now I've only been hitting groundstrokes and I didn't try to serve until Thursday.
Q. You've had the chance to prepare for your come-back in Mallorca with Rafa Nadal.
R. Yes, I arrived in Mallorca on Wednesday at 10 am and at 11 am I was already practising with Rafa. He has injured his wrist and it'll take a few more weeks. He's trying to be ready in time for the US Open, after having to pull out of Toronto and Cincinnati. We practised well, although it was a bit lighter than on the last occasions I'd been with him.
Q. You say the practice was "a bit lighter". How did Rafa seem to you?
R. He can't hit his two-handed backhand, but he's using the sliced backhand in practice. His forehand is as always, though: Perfect. He's practising very well, with the same energy and enthusiasm as always and a very positive attitude in spite of the injury... The ball coming at me is still as heavy.
Q. What's a day's practice with Nadal like?
R. It's a unique experience. Rafa is one of the best of all time. He has 14 Grand Slam titles and he was the ATP number one until a few weeks ago. However, all this doesn't prevent him being someone approachable. Anybody else, much lower in level than him, would have reasons enough for being arrogant, but that's not the case with Nadal. You can ask him for advice at a given time and he'll help you. For example, in one rally he hit a short return back to me, I hit it out and he said: "Try to miss those balls across the way instead of lengthwise". He advised me to make the adjustment.
Q. What is it that surprises you most about him?
R. Tenniswise, it's surprising that with the attributes and titles he has he's still serious and focused all the time... and if something doesn't work out, he keeps on trying it till it does. Then of course there's also his power, the weight of his ball, how easily he puts the ball wherever he wants... Lots of people go on about Federer's technique and elegance, but I haven't seen any other player hit the ball with Rafa's power. It's very hard to return the ball, if you're not in position quick enough, you end up fluffing it. His changes of speed and direction are tremendous. But over and above these things, what strikes you is how approachable he is. The first time we practised together I was expecting someone very distant, what we all think a number one would be like. Not at all. He's very normal. Furthermore, he's concerned about how I'm doing, the ranking I have, the tournaments I'm going to play in, he tells me stories... Sometimes he gives the impression he's not aware of all the history behind him.
Q. What's the best advice he's given you?
R. He gives me precise advice, like the advice I mentioned before. But the one who usually speaks with me and my coach is Toni Nadal. Like any other injured player I don't like being in this situation: I was very close to being in the top 300 for the first time, playing well, confident, with good results. But it's hard to recover and begin all over again. When I commented this situation to him he said: "It's worthwhile making an effort for a few years, because you've practised with Nadal and stood up to him. You need to improve some details, but if you want to get there and you really fight for it, 100%, few things will give you that satisfaction you'll get." Then, in the tennis department, he gave me this very useful advice: "You have to make fewer errors than the other guy, play as well as you can and stay focused even though your opponent is not as good as you".
Q. You hit with him the day of the Mutua Madrid Open final and, on that occasion, you brought him luck. Will you bring him the same luck this time for the US Open?
R. I hope so, but from the little experience I have and without knowing exactly how his recuperation will go, it's difficult to come through an injury and pick up rhythm when you're carrying one. But, in any case, we're talking about Rafa Nadal and you can never doubt him. Because of the way he is and the ambition he has, I don't know if he'll win the US Open, but I wouldn't knock his chances. I hope he gets a good draw to get rolling in the first few rounds and pick up good strong rhythm. It's more difficult than the other Grand Slams but, if he does finally go, he can, of course, win it.
