Hello, all!

I need a little help here if you don抰 mind.

You see, there are students from Chiba Kokusai Junior High School visiting my school. Its kinda like a friendly visit or something to know my country better.

I volunteered myself to help with the day. I will be given a chance to pair up and go one to one with one of the students there and interact with them (probably bring them on a tour around the school). I am hoping that the people here would help me on what to say, or what to expect from them and most importantly, not embarrassing myself and my school!

Let me tell you first that I am 18 and my school is in Malaysia. The students coming would probably be around 15, right? So the most crucial thing is, how do I introduce myself? I know some Japanese, but never really put my knowledge into practice yet

chuugakuseii ka... wakai naaaaa

well... normally first time meeting will always required a formal conversation so it's advisable to use watashi and not the ore/omae cos it's not appropriate. 'Hajimemashite' is a great choice. Followed by your name and finish with Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.

Desu form is also appropriate for first time meeting. Dropping them actually do not giive any bad image as we the gaijin normally do not know their language properly so using the appropriate words will certainly get their respect. Keigo or the formal form of conversation is certainly a better choice (~desu, ~masu form).

Actual name is always being used in formal conversation like kroegand san but not sama. that'll be too formal and not use in general conversation (except receptionist at the office or people who serve customers cos customers is the king in Japan's culture). Onisan might be use if they know u're older than them. And both boys and girls can use it.

Oh, sou desu ka? Kedo... ore post gak cite ni kat forum gendou.com dan mamat kat situ kasi advise tak yah stress sgt pasal formalities ni. Pastu die kate kalau nak panggil nama, tak yah ler ngan suffix -san, -kun, -chan ke dan sebagainya sbb akan bagi impresi yg berbeza-beza...

Ade lagi yg leh kasi advice? Arigatou gozaimasu~

well different people has different views. basically nobody will query u whether u use san,kun or anything else especially if you're a gaijin. i can understand people who won't use formal words in this case cos you're dealing with young people. young people don't care much bout formalities.
