Maria Sharapova ′I would probably not play a Grand Slam mixed doubles, even though Grigor wants to′
Tennis - Maria Sharapova has five Grand Slam titles to her name. But the Russian superstar would be hesitant to play mixed doubles with boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov, who has yet to reach a Grand Slam final on the men's side, for fear of making herself look bad as compared to the Bulgarian.
While speaking to the press during the WTA All-Access Hour in Montreal, the Russian world no. 6 commented, 'I would probably not play a Grand Slam mixed doubles, even though he wants to, But we'd have fun. We do in practice occasionally. But he's much better and I don't want to make myself look bad."
Sharapova and Dimitrov have been dating since the beginning of last year and while the Russian has been a household name since winning her first Grand Slam at the age of 17 a decade ago, Dimitrov has only broken into the top 10 this year and is considered as one of the players ready to challenge the Big Four in the men's game. |

WTA Cincinnati: Madison Keys fights but Maria Sharapova wins!
Tennis: Tennis: 2011 Champion and former world No.1 Maria Sharapova was stunned in the second round by Sloane Stephens and this year she had a narrow escape against Madison Keys.
This year's French Open champion needed 3 sets to beat the 19-year-old American 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Sloane Stephens also showed a brilliant performance as she knocked out this year French Open semifinalist and former world No.9 Andrea Petkovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
They are the best two American women in the WTA rankings right after the Williams sisters and they made sure to stand up to the expectations made upon their names.
The 5-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova got off to a flying start and raced to a 5-0. She had set points at 5-0 to give a bagel to Keys but she held her serve. Sharapova won the first set 6-1.
In the second set Keys became a different player and broke Sharapova in the 4th game to go 3-1 up. Sharapova broke back in the next game but Keys got another break in the next game to go 4-2 up. She took the second set 6-3 to force the match into the deciding set.
In the third set, Sharapova controlled the play for the very first point and broke Keys in the second game to race to a 3-0 lead. She won the third set 6-3 to complete the victory in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
"Against Madison, someone who serves really well, it's always one or two moments that are really crucial in the match," Sharapova said. "In the first set I returned quite well and broke her a few times. She got a bit more consistent on her groundstrokes in the second set and there were some moments at the beginning of that second set where I felt that I could have taken the lead and broken her. I didn't do that, and she stepped it up and was able to break me a couple more times. But ultimately I was happy with the beginning of the third set. That was really crucial."
"I don't think I played my best, especially the first set," Keys said. "That was a bit of a disaster. But I think it's definitely improvement from what I have done in the past. After a bad first set, I could have gone away, but I kind of figured it out, got some better timing and started playing better." |
