jaw..

FBM KLCI surges to 1,247 – its highest in over a year
By IZWAN IDRIS
PETALING JAYA: The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KL Composite (FBM KLCI) Index rose to its highest in more than a year, bolstered by rising banking stocks on optimism the country’s economy will shrink less than expected this year and bounce back stronger in 2010.
In the currency market, the ringgit rose 0.5% to 3.373 against the US dollar – its best level against the greenback since June last year.
There was the growing belief that Asia would lead a worldwide economic recovery, and “local assets are riding on that theme,’’ said a fund manager at a KL-based asset management firm.
Most Asian bourses were up by about 1% or more yesterday, except the declines in Japan and Thailand. Stocks in Bangkok tumbled 2%, spooked by fresh rumours about rising political tension.
At home, the FBM KLCI jumped 13.33 points, or 1%, to close at 1,246.84. That was the benchmark’s highest level since June 6 last year.
Norhashmilaidi Hashim, the head of research at JF Apex Investment, believes the index has further upside potential and may end the year at around 1,270 points.
“However, corporate earnings will have to deliver’’ to support valuations at current levels, he said.
The ringgit’s recent sharp appreciation against the US dollar might indicate increased foreign interest in local stocks, he added.
Shares in CIMB Group Holdings Bhd, the country’s second largest bank in terms of assets, jumped 16 sen, or 1.3%, to close at a record RM12.32.
Bigger rival Malayan Banking Bhd’s share price surged 22 sen, or 3.3%, to RM6.96, while Public Bank Bhd climbed 14 sen, or 1.3%, to RM10.62.
Public Bank Bhd was scheduled to release its third-quarter results by the end of the week.
Some investors see banking stocks as a proxy to the economy, and the sector will normally be among the first to benefit from a recovery.
The Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (Mier) yesterday revised its gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to minus 3.3% for this year from minus 4.2% projected earlier.
The country’s leading think tank projected the economy would expand 3.7% in 2010, faster than its previous estimate of 2.8% growth made in July (see Mier story on B3).
Meanwhile, the Government is expected to revise its own official GDP forecast for this year at the upcoming Budget 2010 to be tabled in parliament on Oct 23.
Singapore on Monday said its economy grew 0.8% in the third quarter, the first expansion in five quarters.
A slew of positive economic data from around the region had helped sustain a stock rally in Asia that began in March.
The US dollar decline, which accelerated in recent weeks, provided a second wind to emerging stock markets after a lacklustre September |
