AirAsia QZ8501: Recovery of victims is top priority, says Jokowi

AirAsia Emergency Call Centre +603-2179 5959

SURABAYA: Indonesian president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said the recovery of victims' remains and debris will remain the top-most priority of the search and rescue operations team.

The team is currently out at sea near the Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 crash site, which has been confirmed as crashed in Indonesian waters.

"We have located the crash site. We will launch major search by air and sea tomorrow (Wednesday)," Jokowi said while addressing the media Tuesday.

Jokowi was in Surabaya, where various Indonesian agencies are working to recover the remains of the Airbus aircraft which was on its way to Singapore from Surabaya when it went missing with 162 people on board, including children and infants.

"We will focus on recovery of passengers and crew members," Jokowi said, adding that bad weather conditions are hampering the search operations at the moment.

Jokowi also thanked neighbouring countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Australia for their assistance in tracing the missing plane and recovering debris.

About 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the United States have been involved in the search. - The Straits Times/ANN

While the search area is now under darkness more photos are emerging of the items removed from the sea so far. These include oxygen bottles, a plane’s emergency slide, and a blue suitcase. Search officials have been briefing reporters at the scene about all this, though we have yet to hear any new details.

JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency chief said Tuesday that just three bodies had been recovered so far in the search for the AirAsia plane which crashed in the Java Sea,

"Today we evacuated three bodies and they are now in the warship Bung Tomo," Bambang Soelistyo told a news conference in Jakarta, adding that they were two females and one male. -

Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir told AFP earlier that according to naval radio a warship had recovered more than 40 bodies from the sea. But he later said that report was a miscommunication by his staff. -

AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes refused to speculate what caused Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 to plunge into the water, saying that a proper investigation would reveal its true fate.

"Let the black box tell everything. Further investigation will be done the moment we manage to retrieve the black box. It is very improper and inappropriate for me to speculate on anything", Mr Fernandes said, according to The Star newspaper.

Earlier, the AirAsia boss also expressed grief to the relatives of the 162 passengers and crew who were on board Flight QZ8501 after wreckage and bodies were spotted at sea.

“My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501. On behalf of AirAsia my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry I am,” he wrote on Twitter.

He also said that the tragedy will be a "scar that will be with me for the rest of my life", Jakarta Globe quoted him as saying
