BAM move to tighten grip over sponsorship
PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have tightened their grip on private sponsorship for shuttlers, maintained the status quo of all national coaches and increased the number of their office-bearers at a council meeting in Langkawi yesterday.
The council agreed that all players under their banner must get approval from the national body before signing any deals with individual sponsors.
As for those already bonded with other parties, they must declare all existing contracts with the BAM.
Top players like Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong will now have to be more transparent about their links with all private sponsors.
BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh said the move would avoid unnecessary conflicts.
“This is to avoid any conflict of interest that may arise between the sponsors of the players and the national body,” said Nadzmi after the council meeting.
Nadzmi said that the BAM also approved the renewal of all their 16 national coaches, whose contracts were due to end on Dec 31.
“Today, we also confirmed the appointment of China’s Zhou Kejian as a coach for our Bukit Jalil Sports School programme, effective next year,” he said.
The council also approved the change to their constitution to appoint two deputy presidents instead of one.
“The rationale behind this is to spread the work load among them and to establish a smooth succession plan within the BAM.”
The council’s other decisions include:
*increasing the prize money for next year’s Malaysian Open Super Series from US$250,000 to US$400,000;
*accepting a decision to build the association’s new training centre on a land adjacent to Awan Besar Tol Plaza of the Kesas Highway;
*agreeing with the finance committee’s new incentive and allowance scheme for the players;
*giving the green light to subsidise all the states to host grassroots development tournaments (consisting of Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 age groups); and
*accepting the post-mortem and report of the players’ efforts at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, where they won two silver medals.
