US market could rally further this week
By ELLIS MNYANDU

IF Wells Fargo’s upbeat first-quarter performance is any sign, Wall Street could rally further this week on any reassuring news from three other big banks due to post quarterly results.

The latest earnings season gets under way in earnest in the coming week, with four components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, including JPMorgan, among companies set to report their latest scorecards.

General Electric, a conglomerate whose results and outlook may shed light on the state of the broader economy, is scheduled to report earnings on Friday.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc will release quarterly earnings tomorrow.

Hopes that the economic slump may be abating and some stability may be returning in the banking sector have helped underpin a month-long recovery in stocks from 12-year closing lows hit early last month.

“The market is looking like it wants to continue the rally,” said Andre Weisbrod, president and chief executive officer of STAAR Financial Advisors Inc in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

“But again, so much of this depends on the news of the day. It looks like we’re going to see the banks showing some improved cash flows, and that’s certainly better than the opposite situation.”

President Barack Obama said on Friday that despite the recession’s heavy toll, the US economy is showing “glimmers of hope”. He didn’t mention the “stress tests” being performed at 19 big US banks. The financial markets anxiously await those results, due at the end of April.

But the president expressed confidence that his administration was addressing the problems of both troubled banks and non-bank financial institutions.

The benchmark Standard & Poor’s 500 Index achieved its fifth straight weekly gain at Thursday’s close after Wells Fargo, the fourth largest US bank, gave a surprisingly upbeat preliminary view on its quarterly performance.

Wells Fargo said it expected to post a record US$3bil profit for the January-March period, and investors became hopeful that more banks would keep to the same positive tune when their results roll in.

For the short holiday week, the S& 500 rose 1.7%, the Dow gained 0.8% and the Nasdaq composite index climbed 1.9%. US financial markets were closed for Good Friday.

Looking ahead, JPMorgan is due to report results on Thursday and Citigroup on Friday.

Lending under microscope

The banking sector’s health has been a major worry after the fallout from the financial crisis led the US government to pump billions of dollars into such troubled institutions as Citigroup, which gave Wall Street a pleasant surprise last month when it said it was profitable in January and February.

With the economy mired in a protracted recession, investors are eager to see if banks have again begun lending to consumers and businesses, whose spending would serve as a crucial underpinning to an economic recovery.

“The banking sector has been in focus for Wall Street for the last six months, so next (this) week sharpens that a little bit more,” said Paul Nolte, director of investments at Hinsdale Associates in Hinsdale, Illinois.

The market is “still going to be very focused on earnings and the health of banks, as well as what Corporate America has to say,” he added.

On Friday, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said US regulators closed Cape Fear Bank of Wilmington, North Carolina, and New Frontier Bank of Greeley, Colorado, which became the 22nd and 23rd US banks, respectively, to fail this year.

Economists: Too early to tell if markets have bottomed out
By FINTAN NG

PETALING JAYA: It’s too early to tell if the downtrend in the domestic economy and financial markets has bottomed out despite the more positive news flow and the stockmarket rallies of late, economists said.

AmResearch Sdn Bhd senior economist Manokaran Mottain said in a report that although the pace of drops in economic data had slowed, it was premature to claim that the manufacturing sector had started to recover.

Other indicators such as employment, household and private consumption as well as capital spending by businesses could still contract, thereby putting pressure on the overall economy, he reckoned.

Kenanga Research economist Wan Suhaimie Saidi said the decline in imports, in particular capital and consumption goods, showed clear indications of continued weakening domestic demand while the fall in the purchase of intermediate goods, which are goods used to produce finished products, was still down by 33.3% year-on-year and 6.2% month-on-month.

He added that this might indicate external demand could weaken further. February’s trade data showed that while exports were still down year-on-year, it increased by 3.4% compared to January. Imports, on the other hand, showed a decline of 8.4% month-on-month.

Industrial output data also showed signs of recovery, posting a slower decline of 14.7% year-on-year in February, against a 20.2% fall in January.

Prices of crude palm oil and crude oil futures have also risen, indicating that demand and economic activity may pick up again as the stimulus packages launched by various governments take effect.

RAM Holdings Bhd group chief economist Dr Yeah Kim Leng acknowledged that the latest numbers showed that things had started to stabilise.

“The downtrend looks like bottoming out as they have eased to declines of 10% to 20% compared to 20% to 40% before,” he said.

In particular, Yeah said China’s Purchasing Managers’ Index, which covered exports, inventories and production, had bounced off its lows and now stood at 52.4% in March.

“This is the first time it is above 50%, which indicates that domestic production is actually rising,” he said, adding that China’s recovery might provide some support to commodity-exporting countries.

Yeah said that while there were positive signs of stabilisation, there were those who regarded any recovery as patchy and unsustainable as long as the US, Japan and EU have not recovered.

“The subprime problems, which caused the financial crisis and wiped out wealth, have not been resolved and will continue to cast a pall on any silver lining in the US economy,” he said.
