This 51 acres boomerang shaped is the second largest of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Manukan has good strentches of beaches on the southern coastline. The best stretch is on the eastern tip of the island. There is a trail system around the island. Ideal for snorkeling, diving and swimming.
The island has very clear waters and is an excellent venue for water-skiing and sea-sports. The beach however is somewhat rocky and swimmers should exercise some caution. There are coral beds on the eastern and the western reefs and multicolored coral fishes abound here.

Pulau Sulug
Farthest away and relatively undeveloped is the 20-acre Pulau Sulug. The shoreline is mostly rocky.
It is popular with foreign visitors who prefer the quiet and abandoned atmosphere. Good reef
patches lie on the southern end. Changing rooms and toilets, picnic shelters and tables are provided.
Supply of fresh water is available.

PULAU MAMUTIK
Pulau Mamutik is the nearest island to Kota Kinabalu and the smallest of the five islands of the Park. Very popular because of its proximity, Pulau Mamutik is usually frequented during weekends.
On week-days, the island is practically deserted and visitors can enjoy the island's beaches in privacy. Pulau Mamutik has many shelters erected by the park authorities for visitors and it has fresh water from a well. It has a jetty, a three bedroom resthouse for rent and staff quarters for the Rangers stationed there. Facilities include changing rooms, toilets, picnic shelters, tables and barbecue pits. Fresh water and electricity are available.
Mamutik would be an ideal venue to get away from it all. The corals to the north-eastern tip of the island are quite interesting. The beach is rocky and swimmers must be careful of sea urchins that exist in large numbers beside the corals and rocks. Facing Tanjung Aru Beach Hotel, the beach to the right of the jetty would be a good place for those who are not every good swimmers.
The trail around the island is easy and pleasant and it can be completed in twenty minutes. Campers and visitors staying overnight on the islands are advised to bring insect repellents to keep away mosquitoes. Mosquito coils may also be useful. Visitors staying at the resthouse must bring their own food as there are no canteen facilities on the island. |

PULAU GAYA
Pulau Gaya is the largest island of the Park. It derived its name from the Bajau
word "Gayo" which means big. Several ridges, rising more than 600 feet and peaking at
1,000 feet, form the backbone of the 3,665 acres Pulau Gaya. It has 16 miles of shoreline with
beaches ranging from fine white sandy to pebbly, and mudflats, mangrove and sandstone cliffs.
The major beach area in Police Beach, a quarter mile of fine white sand sloping gently into the
bay making it ideal for swimming in usually crystal clear water. The coral reefs along
the entire coast of the island are in excellent condition. |

PULAU SAPI
Pulau Sapi is located further away from Kota Kinabalu than the three islands of Pulau Mamutik, Pulau Manukan and Pulau Sulug and is about 25 minutes by boat.
Pulau Sapi has one of the nicest beaches in the Park - its clean white sand andcrystal clear water and coral reefs fringing the shoreline makes it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving. Day-use facilities include a jetty, picnic shelters, barbecue pits, tables, changing rooms and toilets.
There are crab-eating monkeys on the island and other smaller birds that may frequently be seen. The magnificent white-bellied sea eagle which is among the finest of its species in the world has its nest on Sapi and may often be found soaring through the skies. Remember to bring mosquito repellent if you intend to stay a night on the island. Camping is allowed, with the permission of the Park Warden.

CORAL 'N' BEACHES
Consists of 5 islands namely, Pulau Gaya, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik, Pulau Sapi
and Pulau Sulug. The park is approximately 3 to 8 kilometres off Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of
the Malaysian state of Sabah, North Borneo. The park encomprises an area of 4,929 hectares with the
seas surrounding the 5 islands. The island can be visited all year round. Temperatures varies between
23.8 to 28.4 hdegrees celcius and humidity remains relatively highthroughout the year. The surrounding
seas covering a total area of approximately 12,185 acres have been designated as the
Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park.
Geologically speaking, the islands, underlaid by folded sandstone and sedimentary rock and are
part of the Crocker Range that spans from north to the south of North Borneo rock formations. All the
islands feature typical shoreline vegetation such as Pandanus Dubius and Podocarpus polystachyus,
fronting groves of living fossils, a cross between a ferntree and a palm. The largest island, Pulau Gaya
is covered by the only undisturbed coastal dipterocarp forest left in Sabah. Mammals found on the
island include rats, squirrels, monkeys, bearded pigs and the scaly pangolins ( Anteater) . Birds life like
Bulbuls, Sunbirds, White-bellied sea eagle, Sandpipers, Pink necked piegons and the rare Megapodes.
Coral reefs fringe all the islands and are exposed during low tide. The best reefs are around
Sulug, Mamutik and Manukan islands. Excellent reef patches are found between Pulau Sapi
and Pulau Gaya. This living organism are carnivorous animals feeding on plankton floating in the sea.
The different species form coral of different shapes and are named accordingly - stag horn, mushroom,
cabbage, brain, and so on.They come in a variety of colours and shapes--yellow,green,blue and purple.
Coral reefs are home to many kinds of fish, molluscs, giant clam, scorpion shell, sea-cucumber, feather-
starfish, cowry shell, black and brilliant blue sea-urchins. The coral fish include the butterfly, parrot, clown,
dragon, soldier--in all their brilliant colours. Bigger fish, like the red carp, grouper, barracudda and catfish,
and occasionally shark, can also be found in the deeper water.

Layang-Layang Island
Layang Layang, the "Swallow Reef," is an atoll in the South China Sea some 300 km north-west of Kota Kinabalu. The island is man-made and was constructed for the Malaysian Navy and later developed for the only dive resort, the Layang-Layang Island Resort. The island location offers absolute isolation, and the only mode of getting there, except by boat, is the regular Malaysia Airlines flights from Kota Kinabalu. The extreme location of Layang-Layang, the pristine reefs, excellent visibility, steep walls down to 2000 m and regular sightings of pelagics have given Layang-Layang the much deserved reputation of being one of the top ten dive locations in the world.
With resident schools of barracuda and big-eye trevally, and frequently seen green and hawksbill turtles the reef has something to offer for everyone. The corals are plentiful and healthy with sea fans more than three meters across, filtering plankton from passing currents. The 20 m deep lagoon has some great macro creatures to be found, including seahorses, cuttlefish and pipefish but it is the pelagics visiting the outer walls that truly excite divers. Schools of scalloped hammer sharks, grey reef sharks, leopard sharks and the occasional threshers and silvertip sharks can all be seen.
Stingrays are also regular visitors including manta rays, pygmy devil rays, marbled rays and eagle rays. Rarer sightings such as whale sharks, orcas and melon headed whales have all been reported over the last few years. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins frequently follow the dive-boats to each location and divers are sometimes rewarded by snorkelling and diving with these amazing creatures!
With its pristine reef, diverse fish life and visiting pelagics, Layang-Layang has rightly gained world wide recognition.

pulau sipadan...
Acknowledged as one of the best diving and unique spots in Southeast Asia, Pulau Sipadan is located off the small coastal town of Semporna on Sabah's eastern coast. Just 15 feet from the beach, the water turns indigo blue as the sea drops abruptly to 2,850ft deep! It is rather awe-inspiring. Myriad of colorful tropical fish swim in the warm water near the surface whereas huge groupers nose about. Moreover, the water gets so dark that one would not really know what lurks below. This famous feature won Sipadan island a "Best Beach Dive in the World" award in 1993.
The sea is overflowing with marine life. The main attraction for divers is the rich and unique variety of corals both soft and hard. Reef fish of every shape and hue can be found in these waters. Colorful butterfly fishes, angel fishes, damsel fishes of electric blue and bright orange colors inhabit the coral reefs, thus adding to the splendor of the underwater havens.
Between April and September, the Green and Hawksbill turtles will come ashore in droves to nest in the soft golden sands of Sipadan. When you dive during this time, you are bound to encounter these harmless denizens of the deep.
A beautiful white-sand beach fringes Sipadan but the real beauty of this island is in its waters. The season for diving is from mid-February to mid-December. Visibility ranges from 60 feet to over 200 feet. Several dive spots have even been identified and given exotic names after the variety of corals and marine life that are unique to these spots. There is the "Hanging Gardens", the "Barracuda Point", and the exciting "Turtle Cavern".
Professional diving companies operate on the island, complete with water, electricity, food, drinks, and comfortable accommodation for an unforgettable experience. To get there, one can take the 45-minute boat ride from Semporna. |
