Scores dead in Indonesian tsunami
At least 37 people are feared dead in a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the island of Java, a local official has said.
The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.2, struck off the town of Pangandaran at 1519 local time (0819 GMT), causing a two-metre-high wave.
One resident, Teti, said high waves had destroyed hotels in Pangandaran and thrown boats onto the beach.
"Waves suddenly came and we ran to the hills," she told local radio.
Seeking refuge
"Many small hotels were destroyed," she said. "Boats have been thrown into hotels."
Local official Rudi Supriatna Bahro told Indonesia's Metro TV that "the death toll so far stands at 37. The number will certainly increase. I just saw another body being taken in."
He said that thousands of people had sought refuge in mosques and other safe places.
"Many of the injured were suffering from broken bones," he added.
A Red Cross worker, Putu Suryawan, said some 40 people were injured and another 40 were missing.
Earlier, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the search was still ongoing for the missing.
Mr Yudhoyono urged residents in coastal areas to move to safer places and said that rescue teams had been sent to the affected area.
Warnings
Tremors from the earthquake were felt in the capital, Jakarta, for more than one minute, but there were no reports of damage or casualties there.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii had issued tsunami warnings for parts of Indonesia and Australia, and the Japan Meteorological Agency also warned of localised tsunamis.
Police in Australia's Christmas Island reported a 60 cm surge but no damage, Reuters news agency said, while India authorities issued a tsunami warning for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which are located west of Indonesia.
But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said on its website that based on historical and current data, "a more widespread tsunami threat probably does not exist".
Earthquakes occur frequently in Indonesia, which sits on the seismically active so-called Pacific Rim of Fire.
On May 27, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit near the city of Yogyakarta in Java, killing more than 5,800 people.
More than 130,000 people were killed in Indonesia in the December 2004 Asian tsunami.

A tsunami (pronunciation /suˈn?ːmi/ or /tsuˈn?ːmi/]) is a series of waves generated when a body of water, such as an ocean is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Earthquakes, mass movements above or below water, volcanic eruptions and large meteorite impacts all have the potential to generate a tsunami. The effects of a tsunami can range from unnoticeable to devastating.
The term tsunami comes from the Japanese language meaning harbour ("tsu", ?) and wave ("nami", ?). Although in Japanese tsunami is used for both the singular and plural, in English tsunamis is well-set as the plural. The term was created by fishermen although they had not been aware of any wave in the open water. A tsunami is not a sub-surface event in the deep ocean; it simply has a much smaller amplitude (wave heights) offshore, and a very long wavelength (often hundreds of kilometres long), which is why they generally pass unnoticed at sea, forming only a passing "hump" in the ocean.
Tsunamis have been historically referred to as tidal waves because as they approach land, they take on the characteristics of a violent onrushing tide rather than the sort of cresting waves that are formed by wind action upon the ocean (with which people are more familiar). However, since they are not actually related to tides the term is considered misleading and its usage discouraged by oceanographers. |

bagi teman ... tak perlu takut pada tsunami, Ins'Allah Malaysia tak kena punya (dalam beberapa tahun nie la... lepaih tu teman tak tahu la)... antara banyak2 bencana/aktiviti yang berlaku sekarang nie... benda yg plg pelik teman nengok adalah aktiviti2 gunung berapi (volcanoes and earthquake saling trigger ant. satu sama lain) Situasi sekarang jelas sepatutnya earthquake enhance aktiviti volcanoes ... and sememangnya aktiviti tu jelas kelihatan but masalahnya aktiviti2 tu tak follow pola2 yg sepatutnya... ianya macam main nyorok2 lak... |

apa yg pelik?
Bagi yg tak berapa faham apa yang peliknya... cuba kita lihat peristiwa baru2 nie.... kebanyakkan after shock yg berlaku selepas peristiwa di Pulau Jawa tempohari adalah di southwest of Sumatera... tapi volcanoes yg aktif adalah di Karangetang di Kepulauan Siau (north of Sulawesi)... |

Bukan few... malah berpuluh volcano yg masih aktif dan baru diaktifkan (selama ini diingatkan dormant) di Indonesia... and then ada tempat yg selama nie dirasakan pulau biasa rupanya volcano ditengah lautan (cthnya. volcano di Kepulauan Andaman). |

Bkn same mountain since letusan Krakatoa menyebabkan gunung n 2-3rd pulau tu punah sama sekali. Letusan menyebabkan TSUNAMI yg membunuh lebih 30k org.
Submarine eruption continue n new island, dinamakan Anak Krakatau muncul dlm tahun 1927 dekat area yg sama. Lahar yg dimuntahkan oleh volcanic gunung/island tu tak sempat dihanyutkan or dihakiskan oleh ombak laut telah menyebabkan island/gunung tu membesar sebanyak 5 inci seminggu. Since new volcano tu muncul di area yg sama, ia dinamakan Anak Krakatau. - sumber internet.
Mungkin sbb kecik lagi dinamakan begitu. Bila dah besar mungkin bleh tukar nama jadik Bapak Krakatau... Ni aku memandai tambah
Balik kepada bab tsunami, salah satu punca tsunami yg pernah diterangkan oleh ....gist before adalah runtuhan submarine volcano. New volcano ni pun mungkin ada risk yg sama. Kalo tgk kat peta, Krakatau or Rakata Islands ni dkt hujung Sumatra je. Kentut pun bleh bau. Letak BOYA pun mesti tak sempat nak bagi warning so org bleh berpindah. Kena pakai visual observation la btui tak? |
