Taliban seize second district

Taliban fighters entered Musa Qala last Thursday  

Nato has confirmed to Al Jazeera that the Taliban has seized a second district in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Qari Yousef, a Taliban spokesman, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that Taliban fighters were holding captive 33 police officers after taking over Washir - a remote desert area in the northwest of Helmand - the day before.

A spokeswoman for the Nato-led ISAF force told Al Jazeera: "I can confirm that Washir district centre is in the hands of the Taliban."

She said the town would be brought back under government control but declined to comment on any plans to do that.

Qari said the officers' police vehicles had been seized and distributed among Taliban fighters.

Afghan government forces had made an effort to retake the district centre but the attack was repulsed, he said.

Mullah Abdel Rahim, the Taliban commander in Helmand province, said: "It's not just Musa Qala and Washeer, we are in control of much of Helmand province. The people are with us. They give us food, they give us shelter."
Dada Mohammed Khan, the district's MP and former chief of intelligence, said: "The Taliban will now increase its force here and take over the rest of the province."

In recent days, thousands of residents have fled from Musa Qala, a town in southern Afghanistan, while Taliban fighters who moved in last week consolidated their positions.

Haji Assadullah Wafa, the governor of Helmand province, told Reuters that a military operation to recapture Musa Qala would be launched soon.

"The Taliban are only in the town to create problems for the people," the governor said. "They do not have the ability to seize an area and maintain their control over it."

British-led Nato troops withdrew from the town after striking a deal with local authorities and tribal elders in October.

The agreement meant that Nato troops and Taliban fighters were not supposed to come within 5km of the town centre, but a group of 200 Taliban disarmed the local police force, destroyed the district centre and temporarily held local elders hostage.

The Taliban made their move after accusing Nato of violating the deal during an air strike that killed the brother of Mullah Ghafour, a local Taliban leader.

Nato commanders and tribal elders have said that the attack was outside the area covered by the truce.

Clearly something is wrong with US Occupational Force in Afghan. Probably they are getting tired with constant harrasment by Taliban?.

I think in the long run US will run out their endurance to stay in Afghanistan . They should have not invaded Afghanistan in first place.

They have a strong spirit. These shows that the Americans are nothing compared to the crippled Taliban. Insyaallah, they'll get back the land from the invaders. Wonder what is playing inside the mind of the stupid American President. Taliban is supported by Al-Qaeda?...Man... Al-Qaeda again and again (just to justify his blocked mental) and Al-Qaeda is supported by the Iranian... Let's blow Iran.... Hahahahaha.... I can read his mind la.

U.S. sending more troops to thwart Taliban offensive

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Expecting the resurgent Taliban to stage a spring offensive, the U.S. military is moving a brigade of troops into Afghanistan, instead of Iraq, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

About 3,200 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade base in Vicenza, Italy, will go this spring to the porous eastern Afghan border with Pakistan. The soldiers will replace the already extended 3rd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division.

The 173rd already was training to deploy to Iraq, Pentagon officials said.

Moving the 173rd into Afghanistan will have no effect on the forces scheduled to deploy to Baghdad because commanders will identify other troops to replace the brigade, the officials said.

The new troops will keep the level of U.S. forces in Afghanistan at about 27,000, the highest number of U.S. troops there since the October 2001 invasion.

The decision to move the troops came last month when Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited the then-commander in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry.

The general told Gates he needed the additional soldiers to deal with rising violence in the country and to combat an expected Taliban assault in the spring.

Eikenberry extended the 3rd Brigade's tour by 120 days, until another unit could be identified to replace them.
There is no official date set for moving the brigade into Afghanistan, and there has been no word on what units will replace the 173rd in Iraq.

About 50,000 U.S. and NATO troops are currently inside Afghanistan.

At the end of the day , the Afghans will outlast the American. How long they can expect to stay in Afghan?. 5 years?. 10 years? 20 years?. This is all useless. Just like the Afghan has proven in Anglo-Afghan Wars in (1839-1842) , (1878-1881) and (1919) . None of the occupying force able to remember why the hell they don't just let these people alone.
And yes , where the hell is OSAMA?.

KABUL, Afghanistan - Seven children were killed in a U.S.-led coalition airstrike targeting suspected al-Qaida militants in eastern Afghanistan, a coalition statement said Monday. The strike came hours after the deadliest insurgent attack since the Taliban fell in 2001.

A suicide bomber on Sunday destroyed a bus full of police instructors at Kabul's busiest transportation hub, killing 35 people and wounding 52, officials said.
The airstrike, which had the support of Afghan troops, was launched on a compound that also contained a mosque and a madrassa, or Islamic school, in the Zarghun Shah district of Paktika province.
Early reports said seven children at the school were killed in the strike and that "several militants" also were killed, the coalition statement said. Two suspected militants also were detained.

KANDAHAR - Hampir 870 banduan bolos dari sebuah penjara utama di selatan Afghanistan selepas pintu utama bangunan yang menempatkan mereka roboh dibom oleh pergerakan Taliban, kata para pegawai semalam.

Ketua Polis Kandahar, Sayed Agha Saqib berkata, 390 anggota Taliban yang dipenjarakan ialah sebahagian daripada banduan yang melarikan diri.

Tentera Bantuan Keselamatan Antarabangsa yang dikendalikan Pertubuhan Perjanjian Atlantik Utara (NATO) menganggarkan lebih 1,100 banduan melarikan diri.

Jurucakap pasukan itu, Brigadier Jeneral Carlos Branco mengakui usaha Taliban itu berjaya.

"Anggota Taliban melakukan kerja mereka dengan baik tetapi itu tidak memberi impak strategik. Kita tidak perlu melakukan sebarang kesimpulan terhadap penurunan kualiti operasi di kawasan berkenaan," katanya.

Serangan terhadap kompleks penjara itu termasuk pengeboman menggunakan sebuah trak di pintu utama, seorang pengebom berani mati yang meletupkan dinding dan roket yang dibedil ke dalam kawasan penjara.

Bedilan roket menyebabkan lantai atas penjara rosak teruk, kata Timbalan Menteri Keadilan, Mohammad Qasim Hashimzai.

Selain menyebabkan sembilang anggota polis terbunuh, Kandahar turut bergegar akibat serangan itu, kata jurucakap Kementerian Dalam Negeri, Zemeri Bashary. - AP

UN: 1,445 Afghan civilians killed in 2008 violence

KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept 17 - The United Nations said yesterday that 1,445 Afghan civilians have been killed so far this year in attacks by insurgents or US and Nato-led forces - a 40 percent increase over 2007.

Exactly 800 of the deaths, or 55 percent, were caused by Taliban fighters and other insurgents, the UN report said. It said that was almost double the 462 civilian deaths attributed to anti-government fighters in the first seven months of last year.

US, Nato and Afghan troops killed 577 civilians, or 40 percent, including 395 deaths caused by airstrikes, the report said. That was up 21 percent from the 477 deaths that the UN said were inflicted by pro-government forces in 2007.

An additional 68 civilians died in crossfire or other incidents for which UN officials couldn't determine responsibility, the report said.

The UN did not say how its human rights monitors collected statistics on combat deaths, discuss its sources of information or their reliability, or say how it confirmed a death involved an innocent civilian and not an insurgent fighting without a uniform.

President Hamid Karzai has long complained that civilian deaths caused by US or Nato military action undermine his government and the international mission.

The issue was propelled to the forefront of US-Afghan relations when an Afghan commission found that an Aug. 22 US-led operation in the western village of Azizabad killed 90 civilians, including 60 children. That finding was backed by a preliminary UN report.

Karzai's spokesman told The Associated Press on Sunday that the raid didn't kill "a single Taliban," and that it had strained US-Afghan relations. Spokesman Humayun Hamidzada said the US acted on false information provided by a rival tribe.

The United Nations said its count included 92 civilian deaths attributed to the Azizabad operation, although the US is still investigating the incident.

Not only civilian deaths are up. The killing of two American soldiers Thursday raised the number of US military deaths in Afghanistan this year to at least 113, surpassing the previous yearly high of 111 recorded in 2007.

With violence escalating, Gen. David McKiernan, the senior US general in Afghanistan, said Tuesday that he is fighting the war with too few ground troops. He said the shortage compels him to rely more on air power, at the cost of higher civilian casualties.

The UN said 330 civilians died in August alone.

"This is the highest number of civilian deaths to occur in a single month since the end of major hostilities and the ousting of the Taliban regime at the end of 2001," UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement.

Pillay called for greater transparency in accountability procedures for US and NATO forces involved in civilian casualties.

A record number of US and NATO troops are in Afghanistan - meaning more troops to carry out more missions - and the use of airstrikes has spiked this year. There are more than 65,000 international soldiers in Afghanistan, including some 33,000 American personnel.

Still, increasingly violent insurgents were responsible for the majority of civilian deaths, the UN stressed.

Many of the Afghans killed were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, when insurgent suicide bombers detonated their explosives or when roadside bombs went off in trying to attack military targets.

But the UN also said militants are increasingly targeting Afghans that the insurgents suspect of working with Karzai's government or international military forces. It counted 142 summary executions conducted by the Taliban and their allies.

"There is substantial evidence indicating that the Taliban are carrying out a systematic campaign of intimidation and violence aimed at Afghan civilians they believe to be supportive of the government, the international community, and military forces," Pillay said.

After the bombing in Azizabad, the Afghan government announced it would review its "status of force" agreement with the US and NATO and review whether to demand an end to airstrikes and operations in Afghan villages.

A US military review found that up to 35 Taliban fighters and seven civilians died in the raid. But after video of Azizabad surfaced showing dead children and dozens of bodies, the US said it would send a one-star general from the United States to investigate.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry, meanwhile, said yesterday that militants had killed 720 police officers over the last six months. In all of 2007, militants killed about 925 police - meaning the pace of attacks this year has increased.

Afghanistan's 80,000 police have less training and less firepower than the Afghan army, making them a favourite target for militants. Police officers also travel in small groups through some of Afghanistan's most dangerous territory.

More than 4,200 people - mostly militants - have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to an Associated Press tally of figures from Afghan and Western officials.- AP

KHOST: Sekurang-kurangnya sembilan askar Afghanistan maut dibedil tentera asing dalam serangan udara yang disifatkan satu kesilapan di tenggara negara itu malam kelmarin.

Dalam kejadian itu, helikopter tentera penceroboh melakukan kesilapan dengan mensasarkan wilayah bergolak di timur Khost ketika mereka memberi perlindungan keselamatan kepada pengundi yang mendaftar bagi pilihan raya.


"Serangan itu berlaku jam 2 pagi waktu tempatan. Sembilan askar Afghanistan syahid manakala tiga lain cedera, termasuk seorang dilaporkan parah," kata satu kenyataan Kementerian Pertahanan Afghanistan.

Ia bagaimanapun tidak menamakan pasukan tentera asing yang terbabit.

Kejadian itu menyusuli beberapa kejadian lalu yang menyaksikan ramai penduduk awam maut dalam serangan udara tentera asing di negara itu tahun ini.

Tindakan itu membuktikan tentera Pertubuhan Perjanjian Atlantik Utara (Nato) dan Amerika Syarikat tidak berhati-hati ketika melakukan serangan udara.

Namun, ia sememangnya jarang membedil anggota tentera Afghanistan yang juga sekutu mereka.

Jurucakap tentera Amerika di Afghanistan, Kolonel Greg Julian mengumumkan penubuhan pasukan penyiasat bersama bagi menyiasat kejadian berkenaan.

KANDAHAR 26 Okt. - Seorang petani yang dituduh sebagai perisik kerajaan dan tentera antarabangsa telah dicungkil matanya oleh sekumpulan lelaki yang dipercayai pejuang Taliban.

Petani dari wilayah Helmand itu, Sayed Ghulam memberitahu, matanya dicungkil dengan pisau lewat Khamis lalu di depan ahli keluarganya.

Beliau bagaimanapun enggan memberitahu siapakah yang bertanggungjawab melakukan perbuatan kejam tersebut.

Menurutnya, beberapa orang lelaki telah mengheretnya keluar dari rumah sambil menuduh dia sebagai pengkhianat.

"Selepas diheret kira-kira 20 meter dari rumah saya, mereka memegang tangan dan terus mencungkil mata saya.

"Saya berasa sangat sakit dan dunia kemudiannya bertukar menjadi gelap," kata Sayed dari atas katil hospital tempat dia dirawat dibandar Kandahar ini.

Menurutnya, isteri dan anak-anak hanya mampu menjerit melihat kejadian itu.

Sementara itu, jurucakap kerajaan wilayah Helmand, Daud Ahmadi mendakwa perbuatan itu dilakukan oleh anggota Taliban yang bergerak aktif di wilayah itu.

"Mereka telah membunuh ramai orang yang tidak berdosa seperti para petani, kanak-kanak dan wanita kerana menuduh mereka terlibat dalam kerja-kerja perisikan.

''Namun kali ini mereka bertindak kejam terhadap seorang petani miskin yang tidak berdosa," kata Daud.

Taliban sebelum ini pernah memancung kepala serta memotong telinga dan hidung penduduk yang dituduh menjadi tali barut kerajaan.

Suicide Blast Kills 11, Wounds 70 More In E. Afghanistan

KABUL, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- A suicide car bombing against the convoy of United States-led Coalition forces in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province Thursday morning left at least one Coalition soldier and ten local civilians dead and more than 70 others wounded, Xinhua news agency reported quoting officials as saying here.

"The incident occurred at 7:40 a.m. local time (0310 GMT) when a man driving an explosive-laden car detonated it next to a convoy of the Coalition on Jalalabad-Torkham highway killing seven on the spot, all of them civilians," provincial police chief Syed Abdul Ghafar told media.

"More than 70 people were also wounded by the blast in which the bomber used at Toyota Corolla car," he added.

Meanwhile, Coalition forces confirmed the incident in a statement released later the day saying that one U.S. service member and ten Afghan civilians were killed when a suicide bomber on Thursday entered a meat market area and detonated the bomb in Bati Kot district of Nangarhar province.

"The Afghan National Police have secured the scene, and are providing assistance for casualties," it added.

It is the second car bomb blast in the past two days. The previous one which rattled southern Kandahar city on Wednesday left six persons dead and injured over 42 others.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and international troops based in the war-torn nation have claimed responsibility for both the attacks.

Moreover, two soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed Wednesday in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, said an ISAF statement on Thursday.

However, it did not give any further information about the victims saying "it is ISAF policy not to release the nationality of any casualty prior to the relevant national authority doing so. "

Spiraling conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency have claimed over 5,000 people with more than 1500 civilians so far this year in strife-torn Afghanistan while Taliban insurgents have vowed to intensify assaults against interests of Afghan government and international troops before the coming winter.

Afghanistan desak tempoh campur tangan tentera

KABUL: Presiden Hamid Karzai semalam mendesak Majlis Keselamatan Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu supaya menetapkan tempoh masa bagi menamatkan campur tangan tentera di Afghanistan.

Karzai memberitahu delegasi Majlis Keselamatan berkenaan bahawa Afghanistan mempunyai hak untuk merundingi penamatan konflik berkenaan dan perlu tahu berapa lama 'peperangan terhadap keganasan' akan terus diperjuangkan di Afghanistan dengan diketuai Amerika Syarikat.

Penaklukan diketuai AS pada 2001 berjaya mengusir keluar rejim Taliban, sebelum negara kuasa besar Barat itu melancarkan 'peperangan terhadap keganasan'.


Hingga kini, 70,000 anggota tentera, sebahagian besarnya dari negara Barat, berada di Afghanistan di bawah mandat Majlis Keselamatan PBB.

Karzai juga memberitahu majlis berkenaan bahawa beliau mahu serangan dari udara oleh tentera antarabansga dan penggeledahan rumah penduduk Afghan dihentikan.

Katanya, tidak banyak perhatian ditumpukan kepada pangkalan militan di luar Afghanistan, yang dirujuk kepada kawasan berpuak-puak di Pakistan.

Karzai juga berkata, perhubungan antara Afghanistan dan Pakistan sudah bertambah baik sejak pelantikan pemimpin barunya tahun ini.

"Masyarakat antarabangsa sepatutnya memberi kami tempoh masa berapa lama lagi atau sampai bila "peperangan terhadap keganasan" ini akan diteruskan," kata jurucakap utama Karzai, Homayun Hamidzada.

"Jika kami tidak ada maklumat jelas berapa lama perjuangan itu akan berterusan, kerajaan Afghan tidak mempunyai pilihan selain mencari penyelesaian politik," katanya kepada AFP.

Katanya, penyelesaian politik yang dimaksudkan termasuk 'memulakan rundingan dengan Taliban dan golongan yang menentang kerajaan'. - AFP

KABUL - Presiden Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai mengecam satu operasi ketenteraan Amerika Syarikat (AS) yang menyebabkan 16 orang awam terbunuh.

Hamid berkata, pembunuhan orang awam di Afghanistan oleh tentera AS tersebut menyebabkan kumpulan pengganas semakin kuat.

Beliau juga mengarahkan menteri pertahanan Afghanistan pergi ke Washington bagi merangka satu perjanjian teknikal bagi memberikan Afghanistan kuasa untuk mengawasi setiap operasi ketenteraan AS.

Hamid juga mengarahkan menteri itu mengunjungi pejabat Pertubuhan Perjanjian Atlantik Utara (NATO) untuk membincangkan perkara yang sama.

Para pegawai tentera AS memberitahu bahawa seramai 15 pejuang bersenjata berjaya dibunuh dalam satu serangan pada awal pagi kelmarin.

Bagaimanapun, beberapa pegawai Afghanistan menafikan laporan tentera AS tersebut dan mendakwa mangsa yang terbunuh sebenarnya adalah orang awam.

Sementara itu, beratus-ratus penduduk kampung di wilayah Laghman yang berhampiran lokasi operasi tersebut mengadakan tunjuk perasaan bagi membantah serangan tersebut. - AP
