SMART Tunnel- Another Malaysia Pride

The "Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel" or "SMART Tunnel", E 38 is a storm drainage and road structure under construction in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a major national project in the country. Once completed, it will be the longest stormwater tunnel in South East Asia and second longest in Asia.
The main objective of this tunnel is to solve the problem of flash floods in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams along Jalan Sungai Besi and Loke Yew flyover at Pudu during rush hour. There are two components of this tunnel, the stormwater tunnel and motorway tunnel.
It begins at Kampung Berembang lake near Klang River at Ampang and ends at Taman Desa lake near Kerayong River at Salak South. The project is led by the government, including Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran = JPS) and also a company joint venture pact between Gamuda Berhad and Malaysian Mining Corporation Berhad (MMC).

HistoryConstruction of the tunnel began in 2003. There are two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) in use, including Tuah on north side and Gemilang on south side. The two TBMs commenced digging in 2004.

On April 22, 2006, the Gemilang machine completed digging on the south side at the Taman Desa outfall, while the Tuah machine completed digging until the Kampung Berembang area in August 2006. The motorway tunnel on the SMART system is nearing completion and will be officially opened on 9 April 2007, after a month-long delay.[1]

How SMART Tunnel Works

First mode (No storms)
The first mode, under normal condition where there is no storm or low rainfall, no flood water will be diverted into the system.Under the second mode, SMART system will be activated and this happens when there is moderate storm.

Second mode (Most storms)
When the second mode is activated, flood water is diverted into the bypass tunnel in the lower channel of the motorway tunnel and it is important to note, that, up to this stage, the motorway section is still open to traffic.

Third mode (Major storms)
At the third mode of operation the motorway will be closed to traffic. With extensive and effective monitoring stations, when the third mode of operation is needed, the motorway will be closed to traffic. Sufficient time will be allocated to allow the last vehicle to exit the motorway before the automated water-tight gates are opened to allow flood water to pass through. The motorway will be reopened to traffic within 48 hours after the closure.
Tunnel SafetyVentilation/ escape shafts at 1km intervals: these powerful air ventilators will constantly renew the air and maintain the air quality within the motorway. To protect the ventilation system during the flooding, the systems consist of a series of shafts each containing an exhaust and fresh air injector. This design enables the fans to be situated outside the SMART tunnel to create a longitudinal flow in the tunnel between the shafts that permits the air in the tunnel to be continuously renewed and to enable extraction of the exhaust fumes. The feature also allows for smoke control in the event of a fire.
Equipped with fire fighting, telecommunication and surveillance equipment at 1 km interval.

why build this??

KL's Flooding Problem

The form of flooding frequently experienced in KL is the flash flood and it can happen several times each year. As the name suggest, flash flood are quick to manifest and equally swift to sub side. Flash flood is caused by thunderstorm which are localized rainfall of very high intensity (>180 mm/hr) and short durations (2 to 5 hours). The intense level of precipitation causes large volumes of storm run-off which often leads to drainage and river system in the localized areas being completely over loaded.

Kuala Lumpur city centre has been experiencing five (5) serious flooding for the past four years, namely on 30th April 2000, 26th April 2001, 29th October 2001, 11th June 2002 and 10th June 2003.

Amongst the factors that escalate flood incidences in KL include:

i)   Urbanization causing increased runoff rates.

ii)  Development encroaching into flood plains and drainage corridors resulting in loss of flood storage.

iii) Bridges and culverts becoming constriction points because of increasing levels in flood discharges.

iv) Siltation in existing channels from indiscrimate land clearing operations.

v)  Free land to undertake drainage improvement works is scarce in the city.

The conventional means to mitigate flooding are no longer effective. A radical approach was necessary and this lead to the formulation of SMART, the flood management solution for the 21st century in KL.

1. ada x kemungkinan overflow kat bawah tu patsu flooded kat jalan (dlm tu)?
2. what is the emergency procedure utk pengguna kat bawah tu?
3. is there any emergency exit?
4. berapakah harga tol yg akan dikenakan?

tak.. macam paip...... kecuali ada kebocoran......
flow rate dia je tambah kalau hadlaju air mengalir tambah....... ke tasik takungan

Buang sampah dlm sungai, mana tak banjir?

Sekarang buat terowong dgn habiskan berjuta2 ringgit. Apa bukti yg kamu tak akan buang sampah dlm aliran sungai bawah tanah ini dan jahanamkan seluruh system?

buat satu2 benda kalau ikut spec, takde yg cuba kurang2kan mana2 part, yg boleh ganggu sistem tak mungkin ada masalah besar, selain masalah kecik...
biasa la, ciptaan manusia banyak je kekurangan...
tu pentingnya maintenance or preventive maintenance.

satu lagi kalau rosak...ada tak kepakaran tempatan utk repair...
takkan harga mencanak camtu....takde sapa yg belajar or transfer tech masa pembuatan terowong tu...
kalau takde yg belajar...rugi la...sampai bila dok mengharap org luar aje...

teringat kat kampus aku dulu...kat sana takde longkang....semua nye aliran air dalam tanah...
melalui 1 sistem yg diaorg develop...lupa nama sistem tu
