Appeal to preserve landmark

HISTORICAL SITE: The 87-year-old building which houses the JohorCultural and Sports Club in Jalan Sungai Chat. The club has been toldto relocate to a new building between the Royal Johor Country Club andTaman Tasek residential area.

ONE of Johor's oldest and most well knownassociations has appealed to the state government to preserve thehistorical Johor Cultural and Sports Club (JCSC) in Jalan Sungai Chat.

[table=200][/table] The JCSC, previously known as the Johor Civil Service Club, wantsthe menteri besar to ensure that the 87-year-old building will bepreserved and integrated into the area's development plans.

JCSC president Dr N.G. Baskaran said it was vital to preserve thestructure to allow the younger generation to know its role in thestate's history.

The club has been told to relocate to a newbuilding between the Royal Johor Country Club and the Taman Tasekresidential area.

  The land on which the clubhouse  now sits has been earmarked for a mixed development of condominiums, offices and hotels.
  "The present building has  historical and nostalgic values," said Baskaran of the  landmark  opposite the Hyatt Hotel.

He was speaking after the signing of a memorandum of understandingbetween JCSC and Astinas Construction and Development Sdn Bhd which isbuilding the new Taman Tasek clubhouse.

  Work on the  RM8 million clubhouse is expected to start in August, with completion targeted in two years.

  The new building will have three restaurants, a seminar hall, badminton and tennis courts and a swimming pool.

"Our fund at the moment stands at about RM2 million and we are thankfulthat Astinas Construction and Development will top up the rest."

  The club was established in 1920 and most of its members were senior British government officers.

  The president of the club had always been the state secretary by virtue of him being the most senior government officer.  

Since 1983, membership to the club has been opened to the public.




aku dah pergi dah JCSC ni.. sbb member aku  ada membership kat sini...  best bangunan dia..  kitorang gi makan aje... then sekali tu ada buat perjumpaan kat situ...  wokey aje!!  aku memang setuju nak jadikan historical site.. sbb bangunan ni memang teguh dan lama...cuma kena buat nicer renovation tanpa ubahkan bentuk  bangunan tu sendiri!!
