I REMEMBER WHEN... Federal Highway was constructed

The Federal Highway started out as a simply four-lane highway with limited access. G. RAMASAMY, a British citizen visiting Kuala Lumpur almost 30 years later, remembers the challenges he faced when working on the highway in the 1970s.

AFTER: A shot taken from the Jayapuri Hotel, then the tallest building in Petaling Jaya, shows the new super highway in 1978. Traffic was a dream.

THE Federal Highway links Kuala Lumpur to Port Klang,which became Malaysia抯 new national port after the separation with Singapore in 1965.

Traffic was heavy between the capital and the port. Malaysia decided it wanted to have a highway with inter - changes so that traffic could flow uninterrupted.

The World Bank provided a loan to upgrade the existing 揾ighway

duk main jalan tu dalam tahun 90an, brickfields - shah alam...

2-3 kali menyembam kat laluan motor sebab ada pasir kat konar...

2-3 kali kena banjir dalam trowong

2-3 kali kena saman....

2-3 kali jumpa antu

2-3 kali tayar pancit

FH, last lalu situ bulan 11 baru ni, antar inlaws ke kompleks tabung haji kelana jaya..... same old road, same craziness , same blues.... FH forever in time

aku rasa, 3 kali kut.

2 kali kat area shah alam, berhampiran dengan exit yg buleh ke seksyen 18 tu...

ada trowong sebelum tu kan, trowong yg panjang tuuuu...

2 kali aku jumpa budak pompuan berdiri dalam trowong.... tengah tengah malam...



lagi satu kali, dekat kilang duit tu..... atas jalan motor... ada menda menumpang motor aku... berat semacam seh....



tapi aku tak de lah takut sangat... budak pompuan tu, ok je muka dia, pakai baju kurung, tapi muka pucat sepucat nya, dan ada black eyes... 2 kali aku jumpa dia.. tu yg aku saspek antu tu...

yg kat kilang duit, motor rasa berat... tak silap aku, motor jadi mcm biasa bila nak sampai kat exit kg jawa (kspu).... tak nampak apa pun...

MOSTI ada worang ingat  pasai  kecoh   kota darul ehsan kat Fed hiway nih....!!! ingat dak?? aku baca ada yang kata almarhum sultan s'gor  tu  membazir sumer!!!  kota darul ehsan tu  'border'  selangor ngan KL !!

The history of the highway started after the separation of Singapore from Malaysia on 9 August 1965, when the Malaysian government decided to make Port Swettenham (now Port Klang) as Malaysia's new national port as a replacement of Singapore.

As a result, the government planned to build a highway connecting Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur. The highway originally started from Jalan Syed Putra / Jalan Klang Lama interchange to Klang but was extended to Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway interchange and finally to Cheras Highway.

The highway was originally a 4-lane limited access highway except for the Petaling Jaya stretch where it became 6-lane highway. However, in 1992 PLUS Expressway Berhad, the concession holder of North-South Expressway has upgraded the entire highway to a 6-lane highway with two toll plazas, Batu Tiga and Sungai Rasau.

The 6-lane toll highway had begun in operation on 11 May 1993. The highway handles incredible volumes of traffic and one should expect a significant jam at more or less any time of day.

The section of the highway from Subang Jaya to Kota Darul Ehsan near Petaling Jaya are paved with asphalt. The exit number system similar to toll expressways was introduced in 2007 at Federal Highway; thus making the Federal Highway as the first and currently the only federal expressway with expressway exit numbering system.

"I hear that in 1992, two toll plazas were added. I did not expect the Federal Highway to become a tolled highway. It was meant to be a motorway.

I am surprised tolls are collected to enter a particular stretch of the highway. Normally, a toll is collected at the end, or to cross a bridge.
