Overworked teachers: Parents want to have their say
2010/05/11
PARENTS want their opinion to be taken into account in the government's efforts to reduce the workload on teachers.
National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA) president Associate Professor Datuk Mohamad Ali Hasan believes it is fair to get input from parents as increased work for teachers would also affect their focus on teaching.
He said teachers should be allowed to have administrative assistants to take care of paperwork so that they would be able to focus on teaching and the overall academic performance of students.
"There is new emphasis on teachers to make sure the school performs well and every student takes up one sport. So with all these responsibilities, they would need assistance, for example, one helper for five teachers, similar to laboratory assistants," he said.
Ali said teachers who place too much importance on teaching at private tuition centres should be monitored.
"Teachers must not be too engrossed in giving tuition classes. Teachers should not give priority only to dollars and cents but to service as well," he said.
A taxi driver with school-going children, Ahmad Ibrahim, 46, said children had to pay a big price when teachers were bogged down with excess work.
This, he said, was amplified when teachers who were absent in class to tend to administrative work failed to deliver the lesson for the day, and the students were unable to catch up.
"My children have to memorise and understand a lot of things on their own when their teachers are not around. They do not have someone to refer to," said the father of six.
Another man who declined to be named said it was not necessary for teachers to conduct extra classes for all students. Instead, he said, they should focus on the weaker students.
ekceli....ramai ajer cikgu2 yg pemalas bebenornyer...... tak ramai yg OVERWORKED pung...... aku bajet ramai yg underworked; ya lorrrrrrrrrr lepas kerja kat sekolah bley buat lagik MLM sumer..... tusyen ke hulu... tusyen ke hilir sumer..... kalu overworked tu bukan dari sekolah depa... hah!!! |

Overworked teachers: Seek help if stressed out
2010/05/11
TEACHERS who are unable to cope with their workload have been advised to seek help before it is too late.
However, Malaysian Mental Health Association president Datin Dr Ang Kim Teng said they did not necessarily have to seek professional assistance.
Rather they should be able to confide in their peers or superiors to find a proper solution to their problem.
"There are many factors to anxiety, stress or depression. Sometimes it could be personal or family problems combined with work pressure. It also depends on the individual's mental capacity to handle stress," Dr Ang said.
Teachers who have trouble coping with the workload should know when to call it quits, especially when they notice symptoms like headaches, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, relationship problems, sweating or shortness of breath.
She said when teachers seek help, it should not just be confined to those around them.
"They should make use of the system. See the management, union or even the ministry and ask for help. Seeking help does not mean they have to go to the doctor immediately." she said. |

Overworked teachers: Efforts to reduce work yet to bear fruit
2010/05/11
HE has seen many plans to reduce teachers' workload and improve efficiency, but secondary school teacher K.G.S. Jayaraj said they have yet to bear fruit.
In fact, he said, the workload had increased tremendously with each teacher having to deal not just with multiple classes, but also unused research work and short deadlines.
"We are sometimes asked to do academic research, but when we complete it, there is no use. At the end of the day it does not serve its purpose," he said.
Jayaraj, 50, of Sitiawan, has been teaching for 28 years.
He said language teachers especially faced problems in completing their administrative work, marking and extra-curricular activity work on time.
"We teach close to 200 students at a time. To mark one essay takes about 15 minutes. That is if we follow the marking procedures closely," he said.
The teachers were also expected to conduct oral examinations for all secondary students instead of just those in Form Three and Form Five.
Jayaraj said tasks like filling up forms should be given to "guru data" whose main duty is to gather and input data throughout the year.
"They teach only eight periods a week, while we do 25. The clerical work should be given to them."
Secondary school English trainee teacher Yamuna Bhai, 22, has more concern over the workload from teaching rather than administrative work.
Her non-teaching work comprises mainly of stapling work sheets which she has to do either at home or during breaks, which was not a problem as lessons were prepared earlier.
"It is difficult for me to manage classes of nearly 50 students each with each student having different needs.
"There are not enough teachers to accommodate the number of students. So we have extra workload."
To cope with her inability to fully nurture her skills at school, Yamuna said she gives tuition classes to gain more exposure and improve her skills.
A retired secondary school teacher who did not want to be named said it was not practical for the government to implement the newly-announced 1Student 1Sport policy (where each student takes up one sport) without having enough teachers to train the students.
He said the Sports Science graduates should also think about getting into the education field to fill the gap and make the policy work.
"They would be the best choice in terms of sports and they can do a better job," he said.

Overworked Teachers: They await good news
2010/05/11
By Lydia Gomez and Yiswaree Palansamy
A DETAILED report on the problems faced by overworked teachers will be completed by the end of this month, Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Md Dom said.
This could be good news for teachers who have lamented that juggling administrative, academic and extra-curricular work had become stressful and was taking a toll on their performance.
Alimuddin, who heads a panel to look into the problem, said he had discussions with representatives of the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) at four meetings and several laboratory sessions over the past two months.
Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who announced the formation of the panel last month, is expected to receive the report by the end of the month.
"We hope it will be good for the teachers, but we will have to wait until the report is completed and when the minister makes his announcement," Alimuddin said.
The report contains a list of long-standing problems faced by teachers and recommendations on how to reduce the workload.
Muhyiddin had conducted a meeting with teachers and the NUTP in late March during which the teachers complained that they were facing additional burden involving co-curriculum classes, examinations, student affairs and administration.
They said this was jeopardising the teaching and learning process in schools.
Muhyiddin said the panel would also come up with a benchmark for teachers at the international level and in neighbouring countries.
good news???? bonus 3 bulan??? hanya allah yg maha mengetahui!! |

What you do outside your working hours is none of anybody's business, apa yang dipersoalkan disini ialah banyaknya berlaku 'biznez' transaction during your working hours...nko diberi gaji for your full comitment during that hours....tapi nko gunakan masa tersebut untuk 'curi-curi' berbiznez...kalau aku sebut perbuatan yang nko lakukan ini boleh jatuh hukum haram, kerana nko tak minta kebenaran dari orang yang menggajikan nko(employer)......nko setuju tak?
Kata ganti diri DIA disini bukan ditujukan pada nko...tapi guru2 secara amnya diluar sana..... |

Tak jugak..aku ada member cikgu..nama je sekerat ari tp tiap2 hari lepas waktu sekolah ada meeting, ada ko kurikulum..sabtu pun kena dtg sekolah..ada kelas tambahan, ada training budak2 utk masuk pertandingan mcm2..
Mungkin maksud cikgu terbeban kat sini ialah kena buat keja2 yg sepatutnya admin buat..ada ke patut sekolah nak wat pelupusan harta sekolah,cikgu2 yg kena kira bape jumlah kusi, jumlah meja..pastu kerani leh chair meting segrigate keje utk cikgu2..pej pendidikan byk no bg tugasan tak relevan utk cikgu smpi mengganggu perfomance cikgu dlm kelas..
Aku rasa kementerian pendidikan kena kaji balikla syllabus pelajaran kat mesia ni n train cikgu2 utk jd pendidik yg kreatif dan mencintai kerjaya mendidik anak bangsa..aku naik takut tgk syllabus pelajaran skrg..budak2 asek kena belajar,menghafal..lupa ke budak2 perlu masa bermain jugak sbb proses belajar ni bkn takat dr buku,dr guru atau belajar teori dlm kelas..guru2 pun dah hilang passion sbb tertekan dgn tuntutan nak abeskan syllabus..aku teringat cikgu2 aku zmn budak2 dulu..berbeza sungguh dgn zaman anak2 aku skrg.. |

oh saya tak mau komen bab majikan tu...
