First photos and videos of this rare fish found alive. The transparent headed Pacific Barreleye Fish lives in deep ocean waters and has never before been seen alive.
The Pacific Barreleye Fish has a clear, transparent head and highly sensitive, barrel-like eyes – featuring green, orb-like lenses. These pictures and videos are the first ever of this rare, beautiful deep water fish. First filmed in 2004, but not released until late 2009, the images show us a glimpse of the life of this very rare fish species.
The fish was discovered in deep water off California’s central coast by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). This is the first specimen of its kind ever found alive with its transparent head intact. The only other examples seen of this fish were already dead, mangled by fishing nets.
The fish grows to approximately 6 inches (15-centimeter) in length and goes by the scientific name of Macropinna microstoma. The Pacific Barreleye has been known since 1939, but only from dead, mangled specimens dragged to the surface by fishing nets.
