Azmin reinstated to PKNS board, report claims
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 — A report has come out this afternoon claiming that PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has been brought back on the board of the Selangor Development Corporation (PKNS), as the mentri besar meets with the state GLC to discuss the issue later this evening.
According to a report on The Star Online, Azmin (picture) was informed last weekend that he had been reinstated to his position in the company, just a week after his removal.
The claim came shortly after the news portal ran an earlier story of the alleged removal from office of two senior PKNS officials said to be linked to the controversial termination of Azmin’s tenure on the company’s board.
The report said that Azmin received a one-paragraph letter last Saturday, allegedly informing him that his position had been reinstated effective January 16 on the instruction of the state government.
Azmin was, however, allegedly told that he could not attend the PKNS board meeting today, on the instruction of the office of Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
Earlier in the day, a report carried by the same news portal claimed that PKNS general manager Datuk Othman Omar and executive secretary Norita Mohd Sidek were removed from their posts with immediate effect.
Citing a “top source”, the report claimed that Khalid had ordered for the duo to be reassigned to the general pool over the fiasco.
At the time of writing, The Malay Mail Online has not been able to get in touch with Azmin, Othman or Norita to confirm The Star Online’s two reports.
Azmin was reported to have received a letter from PKNS on January 10, informing him that his tenure on the board of the state government firm would not be renewed.
The move sparked an uproar within Selangor PKR, which held an emergency meeting to discuss the matter.
Khalid had earlier claimed that Azmin’s removal was decided by PKNS itself, but the state development arm later refuted the mentri besar’s statement, claiming that the power to remove members of the board lay with the state executive council.
PKNS said the removal of Azmin — who is also Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman and Gombak MP — was based on a decision by the state executive council on November 13 last year, adding that the power to appoint a board member lies with the council and not PKNS.
Political observers have long noted the rivalry between Khalid and Azmin, with many attributing it to a power tussle between the two leaders over the state’s mentri besar post ever since PR took over the state in 2008.
At a news conference in Shah Alam on Wednesday, however, Khalid denied that Azmin’s exit from the PKNS board was motivated by the so-called rivalry.
“The decision to terminate Azmin was done by the general manager of PKNS,” Khalid told reporters.
“We’ll produce the letter sent by the PKNS general manager and the minutes of the exco meeting on December 4 in two weeks’ time... the exco did not make that decision,” he added.
