GEORGE TOWN: It was certainly a heartwarming scene when firemen risked their lives to save a cat which was left “stranded” at one of the columns of the Penang Bridge here.
Upon reaching the bridge, the firemen immediately sprang into action and one of them was lowered at least 3m down from the bridge to reach the feline at 10.45am yesterday.
Using just a rope and hip harness, the fireman then kept the cat in a bag before climbing swiftly up at the 6th kilometre of the island-bound lane of the bridge.
 Heartwarming save: Thanks to the firemen who sprang into action, this lucky kitty has all its nine lives intact.
Operations commanding officer Daud Mad Disa said the department received a distress call at 10.05am and reached the scene 30 minutes later.
“The rescue operation involved nine firemen,” he said, adding that traffic was smooth when firemen carried out the operation.
It is not known how the cat could have ended up on the column.
