PUTRAJAYA: Former Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Hashim Abdullah has been appointed the new Elections Commission (EC) chairman effective January 24.
Hashim, 62, will replace Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof after his contract expires on January 23.
Chief Secretary Tan Sri Ali Hamsa said that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah had given his consent for the appointment of Hashim as the new EC chairman in accordance with Clause 1, Article 114 of the Federal Constitution.
“The appointment of Hashim is to fill the vacant EC chairman’s position when Abdul Aziz reaches the retirement age of 66 on January 23,” Ali said in a statement today.
Hashim is currently the deputy chairman of the EC.
Ali also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Abdul Aziz for his excellent service and contributions as an EC chairman for seven years.
