PETALING JAYA: A prominent CNN broadcaster today defended the Malaysian authorities in the latter’s effort to locate the missing flight MH370.

In a series of posts on Twitter, CNN’s Richard Quest said that the Malaysian authorities were put in a tough spot, where the situation was without precedent.

“Mistakes have been made in the investigation of #MH370 by the Malaysians to be sure BUT this incident is unprecedented. The Malaysians are in a unique circumstances,” said Quest.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak announced that MH370 flight had crashed in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.

He made the announcement based on data provided by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and Inmarsat, which deciphered the data.

The news broke the hearts of the families of those on-board the flight, with some holding the Malaysian government responsible for the tragedy.

When the flight went missing on March 8, search and rescue effort were focused on the South China Sea, despite the Malaysian military radar showing an unidentified aircraft flying westward towards the Straits of Malacca.

Najib only confirmed that the unidentified flight was indeed MH370 on March 15, a week after it went missing.

In his defense of the Malaysia authorities, Quest said that no one in their right mind would have expected flight MH370 making a westward turn without any warning.

He also lashed out on those who called for developed nations to lead the search and rescue effort, saying that many international agencies are already assisting Malaysia on the matter.

“NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board), the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), the BEA ,the AAIB (Air Accidents Investigation Branch) are all accredited and taking part. It’s silly to suggest that only 1st world countries should investigate,” said Quest.

However, the CNN celebrity did question on how the Malaysian military could have missed detecting flight MH370 making a westward turn towards its own air space.

“The big question is how the Malaysian military missed #mh370 going back across the country. THAT is a scandal,” said Quest.
