KUALA LUMPUR: The Auditor-General has found that fish bought on contracts by two hospitals are higher by between 34.4 per cent and 100 per cent compared to the market prices.

According to the Auditor-General's Report 2013, Series 1, this resulted in the government not getting the value for money, having had to pay very high prices compared to the market prices.

The report tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today cited one kg of siakap was bought at RM21 per kg in the 2012-2014 contract by the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor compared to RM14.50 per kg in the market while squid was bought at RM16 per kg (RM9.50 per kg in the market).

The Kuala Lumpur Hospital bought pomfret at RM21.50 per kg in the 2012-2014 contract against RM16 per kg in the market, groupers for RM19.50 per kg (RM12 in the market), nyior fish for RM18 (RM10 market) per kg, and catfish RM11 per kg (RM5.50 in the market), it added.

Hence, the Auditor-General urged the Health Ministry to plan and monitor procurement of perishable goods and monitor the prices to get the value for money in the purchases.

The Health Ministry, in its reply, said the contract prices of fish paid by the two hospitals included transportation cost. - BERNAMA
