KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — Veteran opposition lawmaker Karpal Singh, 73, was killed in a car accident along the North-South Highway near Gopeng, Perak early this morning. His son and Puchong MP, Gobind Singh Deo, confirmed Karpal’s death on Twitter at about 3.30am. “With deep regret I announce the passing of my father YB Karpal Singh. Details will follow,” he posted on his official Twitter account, @GobindSinghDeo. The Bukit Gelugor MP died on the spot in the 1.30am accident as did his long-time aide, Gobind told The Star Online. “His assistant Michael was also killed in the accident while the driver is critically injured,” he was quoted saying. Gobind said his brother, Ramkarpal Singh, was also travelling with their father in the Toyota Alphard but escaped with minor injuries. The wheelchair-bound Karpal, who was also a prominent lawyer, was heading to Penang from Kuala Lumpur for a court hearing later today when the accident happened, The Star reported. The veteran DAP politician had been involved in a car accident in 2005 that left him unable to walk and severely restricted his upper body movement. Born in Penang on June 28, 1940, Karpal graduated with a law degree from the University of Singapore and joined the DAP in 1970. He ran for Parliament in the 1978 general election and won the federal seat for Jelutong, which he held for five terms and which also earned him the moniker, “Tiger of Jelutong”. Karpal leaves behind a wife, five children and four grandchildren. MMail
