KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese-based parties say DAP should quit Pakatan Rakyat should it fail to stop its partner, PAS, from pushing ahead with its hudud agenda. In a joint statement, MCA, Gerakan, SUPP and LDP said DAP should take the responsibility to stop the Islamist party from imposing theocratic laws. MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this in response to PAS’ announcement that it would table a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament in June to pave the way for the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan. Calling on DAP to apologise to non-Muslim voters, Liow said the party should also take responsibility for misleading the Chinese community by supporting PAS in the last two general elections. “Failure to do so would indicate that DAP is powerless despite having the most number of parliamentary seats among the Pakatan component parties,” he said at a joint press conference attended by leaders from MCA, Gerakan, SUPP and LDP at Wisma MCA here yesterday.  “By right, DAP should be calling the shots in Pakatan. “Otherwise, DAP would be seen as betraying the trust of non-Muslim voters.” DAP, said Liow, had used its Red Bean Army of cyber troopers to discredit MCA, Gerakan, SUPP and LDP and “cover up” PAS’ questionable agenda via certain journalists and academicians. He said DAP should at least have a conscience and not betray the future generation. “The party should not be an accomplice to the formation of a theocratic state,” said Liow, adding that the nine MPs from three of their parties would definitely oppose the Bill should it be tabled. MCA has seven MPs while SUPP and Gerakan have one MP each. Liow also hit out at DAP for shamelessly diverting attention to Umno and advised the party to persuade PKR to outrightly reject hudud. “DAP should convince PKR to reject hudud rather than falsely shifting the blame on Barisan Nasional,” he said. “It should take care of its own backyard before meddling into the affairs of others.” Blaming DAP and PKR for feigning ignorance over PAS’ ultimate aim, Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said “both parties should take responsibility for helping PAS to reach its current state of affairs”. SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin said the current fiasco showed Pakatan was not a coherent pact. LDP vice-president Chin Shu Ying said PAS had failed to make any inroad into Sabah despite trying hard over the last 15 years. “This is because they do not have the support of Sabahans,” he said. |
