Euro 2008 - Volkan appeal rejected

Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel will miss the Euro 2008 semi-final against Germany after his ban for violent conduct was withheld by UEFA.
Volkan was slapped with the two-match ban after he pushed Jan Koller in Turkey's spectacular 3-2 group stage win over the Czech Republic.
Turkey had appealed the suspension - the first match of which was the dramatic penalty shoot-out quarter-final victory over Croatia - on account of what they perceived to be play-acting by striker Koller.
Veteran keeper Rustu Recber stepped in for the Croatia game and, while he looked shaky throughout and was responsible for what the Croats thought would be the winning goal in the 119th minute, he saved the final spot kick that ultimately saw the unfancied Turks progress.
Volkan was shown a straight red card in injury-time of their final group stage match against the Czechs after he raised his arms against Koller just after the ball had left play, seconds before the final whistle and just after Nihat Kahveci scored the winner.
A depleted Turkey side are missing injured quintet of Nihat, Emre Gungor, Servet Cetin, Tumer Metin and Emre Belozoglu, while Tuncay Sanli, Emre Asik and Arda Turan are also suspended.
This leaves them with only 13 available outfield players, although Brazil-born midfielder Mehmet Aurelio does return from his one-match ban.
UEFA's appeals body also upheld the fine of 30,000 euro imposed on the Turkish federation for crowd disturbances and improper conduct of the team and officials. |

Turkey might play their third choice keeper as a striker against Germany
Turkey抯 injury crisis ahead of their semi-final with Germany is so bad that they are considering playing their third choice goalkeeper, Tolga Zengin, as a make-shift striker if needs be.
揌e could come on towards the end as a sub as last man or a centre-forward. We can抰 allow ourselves the luxury of players choosing where they want to play. |
