Mind showing where you get this term? That could help.
For your information, there is three version of Buddhism - Mahayana, Thervayana and those which followed by Monks. |

You don't even know Mahayana and Thervayana Buddhism? :stp:
Anyway, Mahayana means Greater Wheel (if not mistaken) and Thervayana means Lesser Wheel. There's also Vajrayana - the Diamond Wheel which I forgot to mention. This refers to Schools (of thoughts) in Buddhism.
Earlier of all this schools are Thervayana - followed in Tibet, Nepal, Northern India etc.
Mahayana came later - followed by Chinese Buddhist, Japanese Buddhist and most of Western Buddhist comes from Mahayana Buddhism which was created for the masses.
Originally, Gautama Buddha did NOT teach his teaching to ALL, ONLY to people willing to leave their homes and travel with him or willing to make the sacrifice for Enlightnment. This is bases of Thervayana. Buddhism for all comes later, Mahayana is created to accommadate the masses.

Sephiroth... this statement of yours is VERY inaccurate. During the buddha's time, the buddha have deciples who left the home and be a homeless ones, which those may you now know as monks and nuns, and also, those lay deciple. Among the arahants, Sariputta and maha-Mogallana are his two chief deciples. The Buddha too has lay deciples. He even have chief deciple among the lay deciple. Anepidu is the chief male lay deciple & Visakha being the chief female lay deciple. Not only did the Buddha preached to these lay deciples who have yet to leave the home life, he also preached to others who invited him. One occassion where he gave a discourse on the Uggaha sutta (A housewife's five fold duty) to Uggaha's young maidens (servants) who then were going to their husband's houses, at the request of Uggaha. The lord also taught devas, kings etc. The Buddha is known as teachers to gods and humans.
Theravada follows orthodox teaching, i.e. pure teachings, without bending. Before the buddha attained his parinibbana, there were no Mahayana or Theravada all this different branch.
For the difference between Theravada and Mahayana... Please refer to this page.... http://forum.cari.com.my/viewthr ... &extra=page%3D2
So Seph.... please take note.
