Sailing: Rufina sails home fifth best in Uruguay
10 Jan 2007
RUFINA Tan ended her optimist sailing career with her best-ever finish in the World Optimist Championships when placed fifth in the overall standings in Montevideo, Uruguay on Monday.
The Doha Asian Games gold medallist ended third in her fleet in Race 15 to accumulate 95 penalty points, level with Peru抯 Stephanie Zimmermann, but the latter took fourth place on countback.
Germany抯 Julian Autenrieth won the title when he finished sixth in the final race after he put three boats between him and previous leader Griselda Khng of Singapore.
Julian, who won four races in the regatta, accumulated 72 points while Griselda took the silver on 74 points.
Ecuador抯 Edgar Diminich (90) claimed the bronze.
Rufina抯 fifth placing was her best result in her third World Championships. She finished 22nd in St Moritz, Switzerland last year and 146th in Salinas, Ecuador in 2004.
However, Abdul Rahim Mohd Zan remains the holder of the best overall result for a Malaysian when he was third in the 2001 Championships in Qingdao, China.
Rufina, 15, has voiced her intention of moving up to the Laser 4.7 boat as she will be ineligible to sail in the optimist event which is restricted to sailors aged 15 and below.
Of the other Malaysians in the fleet, Alisa Chew dropped 11 places to 79th after her she was judged to be "on-corse-side" in her final race, Mohd Nazrin Mohd Asri fell two places to 88th, Brandon Ong Jun Wei was also "OCS" and fell 10 rungs to 123rd while Khairul Nizam Mohd Afendy slipped one spot to 169th.
Malaysia sent a rookie team to Uruguay comprising Gemilang 2010 sailors led by the more experienced Rufina to give them exposure as they prepare for the Korat Sea Games on Dec 6-15.
However, the team were unable to defend the silver they won in the team races in St Moritz after they failed to qualify as one of the top 16 teams. Singapore took gold in the team races. |

strategi pembangunan awal sukan sebenarnya sgt penting. s'pura dah berpandangan jauh yg sukan layar ni kurang persaingan dan berpeluang lebih cerah telah melabur dlm pembangunan pelayar2 muda mrk. rufina baru dapat tempat ke-5, tapi s'pura dpt 3 kategori johan dlm kejohanan dunia itu.
Sailing: Singapore win three titles at Optimist World Sailing event
By Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 January 2007 2156 hrs
SINGAPORE : Singapore sailing continued its dominance in international tournaments.
The Republic's sailors have won three titles at the Optimist World Sailing Championship which ended in Uruguay on Tuesday.
At the 2006 Asian Games, Singapore won 5 golds and the honour of being the best sailing nation in Asia.
And they started 2007 on that same winning note, riding high at the Optimist World Sailing Championship.
Last week Singapore won the team event, beating three-time gold medallist Peru.
And on Tuesday, 15-year-old Griselda Khng went on to win the top female title.
The win was much sweeter for her as she was the only sailor to return home empty handed from Doha.
Singapore was also awarded the Miami Herald Trophy. It is given to the country with the best aggregate score of its top four sailors. - CNA /ls

Juara menerima AS$500, kedua AS$350 (RM1,365) dan ketiga AS$250 (RM975).

Moxey mahu ubah persepsi sukan elit
揟idak perlu membeli kapal semata-mata untuk belayar kerana RSYC menyediakan kemudahan untuk peserta akademi, |

Pelayar negara cemerlang

Sailing: Luna Rossa punish Oracle again
VALENCIA (Spain): Italian Challenger Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand moved to the brink of the Louis Vuitton Cup final after winning their fourth point in semi-final action yesterday against BMW Oracle Racing and Desafio Espanol.
Luna Rossa, having dominated their American rivals throughout the best-of-nine semi series to date, again pulverised their opponents to take a 4-1 lead after taking advantage of a double penalty the race judges imposed on Oracle for coming across and bumping them in the pre-start.
Patrizio Bertelli抯 Italians didn抰 look back as they triumphed by 1min 57sec to leave the US team with pride as dented as their stern from the collision.
Emirates, meanwhile, eclipsed Desafio, who had taken a point off them on Wednesday against all expectations, by a similarly wide margin of 1:49s as they also moved within a point of the final.
The Louis Vuitton winner will then face Swiss syndicate and defending champions Alinghi for the America抯 Cup from June 23 to July 7.
Luna Rossa, who won the Louis Vuitton Cup seven years ago, lost out to Oracle in earlier round robin play but the Americans have floundered in the semis having already suffered a big defeat to the Kiwis in the final round robin match which cost them the qualifying group.
That allowed Emirates to choose Desafio as their last four opponent and Oracle have been kicking themselves after ending up with a much tougher, and improving, rival.
Luna Rossa抯 Aussie helmsman James Spithill took the start phase honours yet again yesterday, harrying the Americans into a series of mistakes, culminating in their penalty trauma.
The Italians gybed around on the inside coming from starboard and Oracle, coming across, did not give their rivals room for the turn, touching the Italian bow, leaving the umpires little room for sympathy.
Under the race rules the Americans executed one penalty straight away before both boats went off on port tack. |

Yachting: Alinghi win after Kiwi boat-handling breakdown
VALENCIA (Spain): Swiss defender Alinghi pounced on a disastrous boat-handling breakdown by challenger Emirates Team New Zealand to win the fifth race of the America抯 Cup here yesterday.
The result meant that the Swiss syndicate took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-nine series that decides sailing抯 most prestigious competition.
Alinghi crossed the line 19 seconds ahead of their rivals in moderate conditions off the coast of Valencia that saw windspeed vary between 14-16 knots with short, choppy waves.
The Kiwis had the better start, building up a 5sec lead into 12sec by the first mark, but disaster struck midway down the second leg.
Team New Zealand抯 spinnaker sail ripped and the boat sailed bare-headed for around four minutes as the crew struggled to release the ripped sail and sort out the replacement kite which had hour-glassed after being hoisted up.
Alinghi抯 skipper Brad Butterworth gybed clear of Team New Zealand抯 flailing spinnaker.
SUI 100 cruised past the stricken Kiwis and quickly built up a lead of 140 metres on NZL 92, which lost the equivalent of 38sec over the course.
"We had a little bit of luck," said Alinghi principal Ernesto Bertarelli.
"When they ripped their spinnaker, we had to remain very focused, not make any mistakes and take advantage of the situation.
"We are closer than them to a fifth win, but we still have to win two races.
"Tomorrow抯 race is extremely important." |
