Hypertension due to Contraceptive Pills ??

I would like to know if taking Contraceptive Pills can lead to high blood pressure?

My case is like this:
I went to the doctor for a normal check-up and she told me that my BP is 140/90 which is quite on the borderline. I am 35 years old. She asked me all sorts of questions like my eating habits and any medications I took. I told her I have been taking contraceptive pills (microgynon) for the last 9 years. She recommended me to stop and come for a review after a month. Sure enough after a month, my BP came back down (cant remember the actual figures). So again she asked me to come again after 3 months. I did and my BP was back to normal.

But problem is I do not want to get pregnant, so I would like to know if there are any other contraceptive pills which can be taken that will not raise your blood pressure. I prefer taking the pill then any other means of contraceptive.

Appreciate if anyone can answer this.

hypertension ni symptom dia camne?

dlm seminggu ni... saya selalu rasa nk pitam. tak boleh nak pusing2 kepala sangat.. nnti 1 bilik rasa berputar. pagi tadi solat subuh... masa sujud.. bila bangun rasa nk tumbang. kenapa ek? ni symptom hypertension or low blood pressure?

saya dah amalkan diane-35 for more than 6 months. seminggu pening ni is masa 7 days tablet free.

macam rozery takde sympton apa-apa, tiba-tiba je masa check up kena bagitau blood pressure a bit high...

pill ni biasanye doc suggest klau kita breasfeed. dia tak keringkan susu.. tak sure lak which hormone yg dia ada..

Pil ni mengandungi satu jenis hormon saja=progestrone. Pil2 lain mengandungi kombinasi 2 jenis hormon...estrogen & progestrone.

dear rozey,

yes. 5% of women on OCP (oral contraceptive pills) develop hypertension esp when age is >35.
so i think the best is to change to other non hormonal method of contraception eg IUD (intra uterine device) or barrier method.

actually, if your BP is never beyond 160/90mmHg and you have no other choice of contraception (which is rare).. you may cont on the OCP but must closely monitor your BP AND must cut down the salty ajinomotor, slim down and exercise... howeva if..
despite these, your BP is still persistently >140/90mmHg... then you surely need to take antihypertensive to control yr BP..

therefore..  if i were you, i would rather change to IUD then having to take one more tablet.!

rebas: thanks for the advice!! do you think having high BP is also due to hereditary? because both my parents have hypertension and take medication

yes, i agree with that....biasanya hypertension ni associated dgn combination pil mcm microgynon yg u amik tu coz estrogen can cause blood clot in ur blood which leads to high bp....tapi biasanya pil progesteron ni efficacy dia kurang skit dr combined pil...so u kena amik additional contraception cam kondom, spermasid ke IUD etc

saya stuju ngan dr rebas...as long as u still can use barrier methods, gunakanlah

satu masaalah progestrone only pill ni period tak betul...kadang2 2-3 bulan tak datang period; then bila datang spotting memanjang hingga 15 hari.

hypertension can be primary or secondary..

primary hypertension is when no other cause of hypertension is detected.. this is very common ..almost 90-95% of those yg hypertensive has this type of hypertension ..and this is usually hereditary..

secondary hypertension is when a specific cause can be found eg.. the OCP.. your BP did come back to normal after being off the pill.. so what you have is vary likely this one..
