UN Spacy VF-0A Phoenix
Anime : Macross Zero '' OVA '' (2002-2004)
Pilot : UN Spacy Pilot
VF-0A: UN Spacy general-issue single-seater version. One head-turret-mounted Mauler laser cannon. An estimated 24 single-seater, 4 two-seater, and 2 two-seater armed reconnaissance units manufactured.
* Equipment: Variable vehicles
* Government: U.N.
* Manufacturer: Northrop Grumman/Stonewell/Shinsei
* Customers: U.N.
The VF-0 is a developmental variable fighter that was pressed into service during the Mayan conflict of 2008. It is trial production model and testbed for advanced jet engines and Overtechnology designed for future variable fighters. The project began in February of 2002 after a tentative plan was introduced for an all-regime variable fighter for use against the giants. The first VF-0 variable fighter was completed in 2004. The fighters were deployed for actual combat and functional testing when delivery of VF-1 Valkyrie variable fighter's thermonuclear reaction engines were delayed. Flown over the South Pacific Ocean island of Mayan during a secret program in 2008, one year before Space War I.
The development for the augmentative weapon packs used by the VF-0 series was advanced mainly by Shinnakasu Heavy Industry, but it was not done in time for the Anti-"Bird Human" battle. Therefore, the carrier Asuka's maintenance crew members hurriedly put together the available parts aboard for the VF-0 "Raid," a specification called the "Angel" version afterward, probably due to the final form. One each of the S type and A type were modified to this specification. Even the augmentative weapon packs manufactured by Shinnakasu as well as the later experimental equipment used by the VF-1 had only been trial-produced in a number of sets and a number of patterns. (Except for one conformal missile/fuel tank installed on each engine nacelle, the other parts in the augmentative weapon "Super Pack" were not yet completed.) This special attack/assault specification was used only once in the battle at the island of Mayan.
For the flight characteristics and other such data of the VF-0 plus QF-2200A, they even conducted tentative virtual simulations, produced flight data, and inputted them into the air combat maneuver computer. However, because the air flows of the VF-0's main wing and Ghost's main wing interacted in complex ways at high speed and high angles of attack, there were many unknown segments of data, and the self-learning air combat maneuver computer could only conduct data acquisition, analysis, and correction during actual flight.
The VF-0 special attack/assault specification was equipped with many missile weaponry, but expending them altered the weight balance greatly, not to mention predicting the Battroid mode's motions was difficult. So in actual conditions, the pilot's abilities were relied upon.
The VF series is poor at generating lift with the wing surfaces in Battroid mode, so far greater power compared to conventional fighters was necessary to hover and maneuver on engine thrust alone. The VF-0's weight when using the Ghost as a booster (not including missile launchers and other equipment) increased by approximately 35%, but the total thrust of the engines of the VF-0+Ghost increased less than 20% at normal thrust and increased 90% with afterburners.
Design Features : 3-mode variable transformation system into Fighter, GERWALK, and Battroid modes. Capable of underwater operations in silent mode for up to several minutes.
Structure : Space metal materials are used for the composition of the fuselage's frame, but titanium/carbon composite is used for the outer skin. Due to AWAG/RA 105 SWAG energy converting armor which uses Overtechnology, the VF-0 can employ surplus power to triple the Fighter mode's armor strength in Battroid mode. (Future variable fighters will incorporate similar technology.)
Powerplant : * Two EGF-127 custom overtuned conventional turbofan jet engines, each rated at 91.08 kN and 148.9 kN with afterburning. (Future variable fighters will incorporate thermonuclear reaction engines that are under development.) Due to its less efficient engines, the VF-0 has considerably shorter range, more delicate handling, and longer airframe compared to the VF-1. (Engine nacelles are comparatively longer to accommodate the earlier engine design.) Rectangular underfuselage air intake with semi-retractable slit-style shutter in Battroid mode or space use.
* Three Shinnakasu ARR-2 maneuvering rocket motors in GERWALK and Battroid modes. Standard auxiliary conformal fuel drop tanks on dorsal main body in Fighter mode and on chest and dorsal sections in Battroid mode.
* Option of reactive armor parts or one regular external atmospheric combat super parts (micro-missile launcher/conformal fuel tank FAST Pack with twenty-four Raytheon Erlikon GH-30B I/IR-guided micro-missiles each) mounted on both leg/engine nacelle.
* One QF-2200A Ghost unmanned fighter (the focus of a modification known as the special attack/assault specification) acting as a booster on the craft's dorsal surface, rated in combination with VF-0's re-tuned engines for 305.65 kN and 602.55 kN with afterburning (Thrust and other performance data for the VF-0 with the QF-2000A are estimated since formal tests have not been conducted).
Avionics : HUD. One AN/ALE 55 flare and chaff dispenser system. AN/ALQ 220A IDECM. ASS/PS 110 active stealth system. AWAG/RA 105 SWAG energy converting armor system, other equipment.
Dimensions, External
Fighter mode : Length overall:18.69 m

Performance
Fighter mode : * Max speed:
o VF-0A/S: at 11000m, Mach 2.74
* Cruising Range:
o VF-0A/S (with standard dorsal conformal tanks): 2075 km
o VF-0 (with QF-2000A (when used with continuous afterburning for high-speed air combat maneuvers): 1100 km

UN Spacy Destroid Cheyenne
Anime : Macross Zero '' OVA '' (2002-2004)
Destroid Cheyenne Anti-Air Interception Robot
Development : Variants include an anti-air missile Destroid type with two large missile pods similar to the SDR-04-Mk XII Destroid Phalanx.
Description :
The Cheyenne class of Destroid was developed to serve as a carrier-borne anti-air interception robot to supplement the carriers CIWS, (Close In Weapon Systems.) Produced and deployed primarily on the CVN-99 Asuka II in the year prior to the SDF-1's fateful launch the Cheyenne was ideally suited to the defensive role it had been developed for. Being lighter and slimmer in design that other Destroids in development meant that it could have wheels mounted on the knee's and ankles for high speed manouvering and acceleration. Something that other Destroids could not have to do weight and stress considerations. This permits the Cheyenne to move rapidly across the carriers deck, and on the ground as well when deployed shore-side.
As a precaution against losing the Cheyenne into the sea a large rocket motor powered by the main reactor is attached to the back of the destroid which allows it to remain aloft for several minutes, and can also be used to slow a descent if the robot goes overboard. This also allows the Cheyenne to effectively glide down from its top-side carrier pill-boxes, similar to the mounting points that damaged Destroids were attached to on the exterior of the SDF-1. The Cheyenne uses these pill boxes for additional cover and stability, but is able to leave when it wishes.
The Cheyenne features an impressive weapons package for its size, featuring twin gatling guns, and twin rocket pods, which all take targetting data from the radar dome fitted to the right shoulder of the robot. A missile launcher variant is also available which has had the gatling gun arms and rocket pods removed in favour of large four barreled missile launchers. Due to the modular design of the robot this allows for an easy change over of weapons packages, and provides the carrier with a variety of mission profile possibilities.
Armament :
* (anti-personnel) MG
* (grappling) 2 x hand (identical to VF-0's)
* (main) 2 x large 6-barreled anti-air gatling gun with drum magazine or
* (rocket) 2 x 6-tube rocket launcher, capable of launching conventional rockets, signal and light flares

UN Spacy VF-X/VF-X-1 (Prototypes)
Anime : The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982-1983)
Manufacturer : Stonewell/Bellcom/Northrom/Shinnakasu
* VF-X - Fighter mode only, aerodynamic testing craft.
* VF-X-1 - Advanced prototype, similar to production type.
The VF-1 is built in three main variants (along with several less frequently used variants): A standard soldier's fighter is the VF-1A, a team leader/squadron commander's fighter is the VF-1J, and a squadron commander/Commander Air Group's fighter is the VF-1S. The three models differ slightly in engines, avionics, and armament; notably, the VF-1A has one laser on its head, the VF-1J has two, and the VF-1S has four.
The VF-1 was preceded into production by an aerodynamic proving version of its airframe, the VF-X. Unlike all later VF vehicles, the VF-X was strictly a jet aircraft, built to demonstrate that a jet fighter with the features necessary to convert to Battroid mode was aerodynamically feasible. After the VF-X's testing was finished, an advanced-concept prototype, the VF-0, was flight-tested from 2005 to 2007 and briefly served as an active-duty fighter from 2007 to the VF-1's rollout in late 2008, while the bugs were being worked out of the full-up VF-1 prototype (VF-X-1). The VF-1's combat debut was 7 February 2009, during the Battle of South Ataria Island, the first battle of Space War I. Introduced in 2008, the VF-1 would be out of frontline service just five years later, replaced by the far more advanced VF-4 Lightning III.

Macross remembered
By WOLF.EXE
Sunday January 20, 2008
IN the 1980s, a certain anime with an iconic red, white and blue robot defined what we now know as the mecha genre. But this article isn抰 about Mobile Suit Gundam. It抯 about the anime that rode on its success and improved on it: Super Dimension Fortress Macross (SDF Macross).
It is still loved some 25 years after its creation in 1982. Now, fans are awaiting the latest anime in the Macross franchise, which premieres in Japan this year: Macross Frontier. It is to mark the franchise抯 25th anniversary.
SDF-1 Macross (or shortened to Macross), the spaceship that can transform into a giant robot.
The story of SDF Macross begins in 1999, when an alien spaceship crash-lands on Earth. After studying the wreckage, scientists discover an alien invasion is imminent and plead with the international community to cease hostilities and work together to face this new threat. Ten years later, the alien spaceship is rebuilt and christened Macross. But on its maiden voyage, its main cannons are unexpectedly activated and fired into orbiting alien ships. Subsequently, Macross is attacked by the gigantic aliens called the Zentraedi.
Young pilot Hikaru Ichijyo and budding singer Lynn Minmay are caught up in the attack and through various circumstances find themselves embroiled in an epic intergalactic war that will change the history of mankind forever.
During the mecha anime revolution spearheaded by Gundam, there was a flood of such anime in the market with very similar themes |
