Nine killed in gunman's rampage at Finnish school

went on a rampage and killed nine people in Kauhajoki.

HELSINKI (AFP) - A gunman went on a rampage inside a Finnish trade school on Tuesday, killing nine people before shooting himself in a failed bid to commit suicide, government and local officials said.

"There are nine dead. We have no up-to-date information about the injured or how many there are," Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen told reporters. Police believe all the dead were students at the the school, the STT news agency reported.

Ari Paananen, at the mayor's office in the southwestern Finnish town of Kauhajoki where the shooting occurred, meanwhile told AFP that the gunman, whose identity has not been revealed, "shot himself, but he's not dead. He's injured."

According to media reports, the gunman had suffered a bullet wound to the head and was being treated at the Tampere University Hospital. Finnish Interior Minister Anne Holmlund said police had questioned the suspect the day before the shooting after he posted a video of himself at a shooting range on the Internet.

The shooting at the school in Kauhajoki, some 360 kilometres (224 miles) from Helsinki, began at around 11:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) and lasted for about an hour and a half, Paananen said. Witnesses described a chaotic scene of panic and terror. "I heard the sound of shooting and hysterical girls' voices.

Then two girls came towards my room and said a weird man was shooting," the school's janitor Jukka Forsberg told AFP. "I went to see and saw a guy leaving a big black bag in the corridor and going into classroom number three and closing the door.

"I looked through window and he immediately shot at me. Then I called the emergency number," he said, adding, "Thank God I was not hit! He fired at me but I was running zigzag. I ran for my life."

The headmaster in a school next door to the building where the drama occurred, Tapio Varmola, also described horrifying scenes. "People were running out of the building in two directions. When I went out I didn't hear any shots, only screams," he told the STT news agency.

The school had been set on fire in several locations around the building, a fire brigade duty officer said, but the blaze had been brought under control.

Thick smoke was however still complicating the police investigation and search of the premises, STT reported.

Police wearing bullet-proof vests continued to patrol the grounds around the school, whose around 200 students had been evacuated.

The gunman, who was wearing a ski mask during the attack, may also have been carrying explosives on him, according to the YLE public broadcaster.

Several media reports said the gunman was a student at the school in his 20s. In an eerie reminder of Finland's last school shooting in which eight people and the gunman were killed, the interior minister said Tuesday's suspect had posted a video of himself at a shooting range on the Internet.

"The person suspected of being the shooter had posted a video on the Internet last Friday where he was shooting at a shooting range," she said.

"Police were aware of this and spoke to him on Monday, September 22 ... However the police officer on duty decided there was no need to terminate his gun license," she said, adding that he held a "temporary license for a .22-caliber gun he obtained in 2008.

Tuesday's shooting came less than a year after a massacre at a Finnish high school in Jokela, north of Helsinki.

On November 7, 2007, 18-year-old student Pekka-Eric Auvinen shot five boys aged between 16 and 18, the 61-year-old headmistress, a 42-year-old female nurse and a 25-year-old single mother who was also a student.

He then turned his gun on himself. Before he went on his deadly rampage, Auvinen had posted a video entitled "Jokela High School Massacre -- 11/7/2007" on file-sharing website YouTube.

Following the Jokela massacre, numerous schools across Finland were evacuated following similar threats.

Finland's cabinet also moved to toughen the country's gun laws. Finland has one of the world's highest gun ownership rates, ranking third behind the United States and Yemen, according to a study last year by the Small Arms Survey of the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

Mangsa pembunuhan kolej vokasional dikenal pasti

KAUHAJOKI - Pihak berkuasa Finland semalam berjaya mengenal pasti 10 mangsa pembunuhan sebuah kolej vokasional berikutan mayat mangsa rentung akibat dibakar suspek.

Lakukan pembunuhan kerana bencikan manusia

Seluruh kolej panik apabila Saari, berpakaian serba hitam dan membawa sebuah beg besar, memasuki bangunan sejurus sebelum jam 11 pagi waktu tempatan kelmarin.

Finland Supports Stronger International Cooperation In Overcoming Crisis

BEIJING, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Finnish President Tarja Halonen said here Friday that the international society could and would overcome the present financial crisis by taking concrete action and by cooperating more closely with each other, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Finland supports the proposals that have been put forward for a stronger international cooperation in this field," Halonen said when addressing the opening ceremony of the two-day seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

"We believe that we all should approach the call for a genuine reform of the international financial system with an open mind," she noted.

Meanwhile, the president highlighted that "the present economic situation is not a reason to slow down the process to fight climate change".

"We now need a powerful global agreement more than ever," she said, noting that key elements to mitigating climate change were to agree on reducing emissions and to ensure enough resources to both development and global distribution of clean technology.

"Energy efficiency is certainly a field where we can enhance cooperation between European and Asian partners," she said.

Finland was the host of the sixth ASEM in 2006. The Declaration on Climate Change, adopted in Helsinki, capital city of the European nation, "is a strong and joint signal on how we want to shape our common future", she said.

"Over the past years, ASEM has really developed to be an important forum that has brought our two regions closer together and to tackle the challenges we are facing," the president noted.

The Beijing Summit is the first gathering for leaders of ASEM members since the body's enlargement to 45 members in 2006. This showed that ASEM was a "dynamic process", Halonen said.

"Together we are stronger, together we can make a difference during the times of economic uncertainties and turbulence, and together we can promote sustainable development, climate issues and food availability," she noted.
