Cat owners may have suspected as much, but it seems our feline friends have found a way to manipulate us humans.
Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food.
Unlike regular purring, this sound incorporates a "cry", with a similar frequency to a human baby's.
The team said cats have "tapped into" a human bias - producing a sound that humans find very difficult to ignore.
Dr Karen McComb, the lead author of the study that was published in the journal Current Biology, said the research was inspired by her own cat, Pepo.
"He would wake me up in the morning with this insistent purr that was really rather annoying," Dr McComb told BBC News.

On examining the frequency of the special purr, she found a peak similar to that of a baby's cry, which gave it a "noisy, slightly whiny quality".
However, not all cats have the cry; the researchers, who examined 10 cats, found it only in those living in single-person households. "We found that cats learn to dramatically emphasise the peak when dealing with human owners that have a one-on-one relationship," McComb said.
Asked whether the cat's special purr is more effective than a dog's bark, or other demand for food, she said: "I think it might be more effective than a dog. If you ask people who own cats what they do when they get up they say they feed their cats. Even before they have a cup of coffee. Cats are very good at getting their own way."

mrs...same cm bubu pu3 ler..first pu3 jumpa dia bagi tido lam kotak dulu..pastu mengiau memekakkn telinga je..geramm..bila dikeluarkn dari kotak..bagi susu kenyang..bolat je perut..pastu pu3 tepuk ..main2 perut dia ..terus tidu sebelah bantal pu3..adoii mnja sakan tucen2 zaman syikalang.. |

aku ada sekor kucing yg kuat menggesel kat kaki aku, sampai nak jalan pun susah.....lemas aku dibuatnya
ada pulak sekor tu suka sgt bawak balik macam2 benda.....daun, tisu, kertas, bulu ayam, tulang, tikus mati dan mcm2 lagi. Naik jenuh nak buang benda2 tu setiap pagi. |

kucing aku ader jugak dulu ... ngap ibu kaki aku kalo x layan ddia.... tapi gigit manja laaa.. last sekali aku x tau aku siap marah dia bagi warning terus x berani lagi dos. huhuhuuh.... kucing baru nie tak berani laks wak camtue hahaha....
tapi yg mari atas dada kita urut tue ada laaah, ingat takut kita sakit kut... lama jugak dia urut kalo dibiorkan yer hhehehehhe....
