A young girl in India committed the ultimate act of altruism by giving her life so that her father could continue to see and her brother could receive a desperately needed kidney to save his life. Sadly, it was all for naught. Distraught over their plight, 12-year old Mumpy hit upon a plan. In order to help her father, Mridul Sarkar, and brother, Monojit, and to save the dowry, young Mumpy Sarkar would commit suicide with the intention of donating her organs. According to Dhantala panchayat pradhan Tapas Tarafdar, Mumpy consumed a pesticide called Thiodan on June 27, then told her father that she dreamed someone poisoned her. Her father, quite alarmed, took her to a physician, who attempted to treat her. Her condition went south, and after being bounced around hospitals, eventually died. Leaving behind a detailed suicide note explaining what she wanted done with her organs, Mumpy was unfortunately cremated before her father could find the note on her bed. Her mother apparently went into shock over hearing about what happened. Sadly, this could have been prevented. Mumpy confided in her sister Monica about her plan, and apparently urged her to do the same thing. Monica laughed it off and went to school. Shortly after she killed herself. |
