NASA’s UARS satellite
The UARS, or Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, was launched in 2001. NASA planned to ditch the satellite in the Pacific Ocean in 2005, but the satellite ran out of fuel. The satellite has been getting closer to closer to earth and is currently orbiting earth at an altitude of about 150 miles.ABC reportsthat UARS weighed six tons when it was launched. The satellite will fall to earth in pieces and NASA says that some of the metal chunks could be as big as 1,200 pounds

Falling satellite could strike Canada, Africa, Australia 11:43am Sept 2011
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The biggest piece of US space junk to fall in 30 years is taking aim at a vast span of territory that includes Canada, Australia and Africa as well as plenty of open ocean, Nasa said on Friday.
The US space agency stressed there was a 'very remote' risk to the public from the 26 fragments of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) expected to survive the fiery re-entry into the atmosphere.
The latest data showed the debris could re-enter Earth's atmosphere between 11pm on Friday (0300 GMT Saturday, 11am Singapore time) and 3am on Saturday (0700 GMT, 3pm Singapore time), according to Nasa. 'During that time period, the satellite will be passing over Canada, Africa and Australia, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. The risk to public safety is very remote,' the agency added in an update

NASA's dead six-ton satellite slammed to Earth early this morning - with reports suggesting some fell in Canada.
The satellite, roughly the same size as a bus, entered Earth's atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean at around 5:00 this morning.
More than 550kg of satellite was expected not to burn up on re-entry, and mild panic ensued as boffins weren't able to predict where it would land.
Some of the debris from the defunct Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), which had been in orbit for 20 years, is thought to have landed in western Canada, in a small town south of Calgary - according to reports onm Twitter.
It was predicted that the spray of debris would stretch more than 500miles.
UARS was one of about 20,000 pieces of space junk orbiting around the planet.
NASA calculated the odds of someone being hurt as being 3200 to 1.
A Nasa statement by on the UARS website said: "The satellite was passing eastward over Canada and Africa as well as vast portions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans during that period.
"The precise re-entry time and location are not yet known with certainty." |
