Tokyo-based Sou Fujimoto Architects drew inspiration from the banyan tree (known for having a lattice of roots that give it a sturdy base) to create "21st Century Oasis" — a concept that was recently pronounced winner of the Taiwan Tower International Competition. It may not be a candidate to become the world's tallest, thinnest, or wackiest building, but once it's built in the city of Taichung, its one-of-a-kind design and eco-friendly features will surely propel it to global popularity.

Green oasis commended by Taiwan Tower judges

Architecture contests are never short of ambitious projects, and the modern masterpiece proposed by Japanese practice Sou Fujimoto Architects in collaboration with Taiwanese firm Fei & Cheng Associates that took first place in the Taiwan Tower International competition for Taichung city is no exception.

'21st century oasis' takes inspiration from the trunk of the Taiwanese banyan tree, with an ornate structural system designed to cast stippled light over the space. From a design perspective, LED lights also provide the option of illuminating the exterior, Chinese lantern-style, at night.

Positioned within a green belt, the building will act as an urban retreat with a green rooftop 300m above the city. Also incorporated are features like rainwater harvesting, solar hot water panels, wind turbines, and photovoltaic cells.
