Ulat dan rumput bukan benda yang asing lagi dalam kehidupan kita. Tapi bagaimana dengan rumput ulat, pernahkah anda bayangkan bagaimana bentuknya? Tapi itulah nama tumbuhan unik dan menakjubkan yang ketika ini hanya boleh hidup di dataran tinggi Qingzhang (terletak 3500 meter di atas permukaan laut) China ini.

Ajaibnya, rumput ulat yang memiliki nama latin Cordyceps ini merupakan kombinasi ulat dan rumput. Selama musim sejuk, cordyceps hidup di dalam tanah seperti ulat, sedangkan di musim panas dia akan keluar dari tanah dan tumbuh menjadi tanaman kecil.

Species of the genus Cordyceps (Fr.) Link (Chinese caterpillar fungi, Tochucaso in Japanese; Clavicipitaceae, Ascomycetes) are the fungi found growing on insect larvae, mature insects, or fruiting bodies of trufﬂ es of the genus Elaphomyces.

The name Cordyceps comes from the Latin words: cord and ceps, respectively, meaning “club” and “head.” The Latin word-conjunction accurately describes the appearance of these club fungi, whose stroma and fruit body extend from the mummi-ﬁed carcasses of insect larvae, usually that of the Himalayan ghost Moth, Thitarodes armoricanus (=Hepialis armoricanus).

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cordyceps has been used to treat conditions including respiration and pulmonary diseases; renal, liver, and cardiovascular diseases; hyposexuality; and hyperlipidemia. It is also used in the treatment of immune disorders and as an adjunct to modern cancer therapies (chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery).Cordyceps is believed by many, particularly in and around Tibet (its place of origin), to be a remedy for weakness
and fatigue, and it is often used as an overall rejuvenator for increased energy while recovering from a serious illness. Many also believe it to be a treatment for impotence, acting as an aphrodisiac in both men and women.
