Guatemalan lawmakers approved Tuesday a decoration for racewalker Erick Barrondo in honor of his winning a silver medal last weekend in the 20-kilometer walk at the 2012 London Olympics.

The 116 members present at the session voted unanimously in favor of making Guatemala's first-ever medal winner a Knight of the Order of the Sovereign Congress.

Barrondo will also receive $64,000.

"If in England there is a Sir Alex Ferguson (manager of top soccer club Manchester United), why in Guatemala can't there be a Knight Erick Barrondo?" legislator Haroldo Quej asked as he explained why he voted in favor of the honor.

President Otto Pérez Molina met Tuesday with Dora and Bernardo Barrondo, parents of the athlete, who will compete next Saturday in the 50-kilometer walk, to coordinate the details of the trip that the government will provide so they can go to London and cheer on their son.

"They are being given the trip to accompany Erick and give him the warmth and support he needs for the race," a spokesperson for the president's office told Efe.

"He's going to be welcomed as a hero, as he deserves. We're going to be waiting for him with open arms," Pérez Molina said last Saturday after Barrondo's medal-winning performance in the 20-kilometer event.

VICTORY for Guatemala!! First Olympic Medal Ever!!

The country of Guatemala erupted into joyous celebration today after Erick Bernabe Barrondo Garcia made history and won the first Olympic Medal EVER for Guatemala!!

Barrondo took second place in the 20 Km Race at the 2012 London Olympics and won the Silver Medal – the first Olympic Medal for Guatemala since it began participating in the Olympics in 1950′s!

Barrondo was only 11 seconds behind 1st place winner – China‘s Chen Ding – who set a new Olympic record with a time of 1:18:46. Coming in 3rd and winning the Bronze Medal was China‘s Wang Zhen. Two favorites going into the competition – Beijing 2008 Olympic Champion Russian Valeriy Borchin and the former world record holder Vladimir Kanaykin – failed to medal. Borchin of Russia tried to stay in contention for the bronze medal but collapsed with exhaustion on the final stretch.

Going into the Olympic 20 Km Race Guatemala’s Barrondo held the 8th best time among the 59 Olympic athletes in the event. Barrondo’s Silver Medal is the Guatemalan’s crowning achievement in a year filled with outstanding athletic accomplishments. This year Barrondo became the Pan-American Champion and also won the National Championship of Spain in the 50 Km. Additionally, he won 3rd place in Lugano, Switzerland. Barrondo credits his “high altitude” training in Sierra, Nevada and Granada, Spain for his amazing successes this year.

Before his victory today Barrondo was quoted as saying “Let’s do it for our country” - and boy you certainly did that today Chapin Erick Barrondo! YOU made history today for your country! YOU are a hero! YOU have made all of us who live in Guatemala VERY proud! Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS Erick Barrondo – Guatemala LOVES you!!!
