Ini ada sedikit about G6PD ni :
cuba sedaya bolih  jauhi bahan2 yg boleh menyebabkan sel darah merah pecah....seperti bahan2  yg mengandungi sulphur(kapur barus), kacang parang, sesetengah ubat dan antibiotik.......ia bolih membuat sel darah merah pecah ...baby boleh jadi jaundice, sometimes kalau teruk kencingnya boleh jadi merah dan hitam...kalau terjadi mcm ni kenala pergi hospital utk dptkan rawatan...(semua ni saya baca dari medical online) maklum 2 org anak kamai megidap G6PD ni jadi kenalah peka about penyakit ni.

When I was 7, after getting an injection from a clinic, I peed bloody urine. Lots of it. My mom was horrified and I was rushed to the UM hospital. Doctors did some test and warned my mom not to let me eat fava beans. Just like that. No other detailed explanation.

So I went home. Months later, a relative gave my mom a bag of fava beans. I ate them but not all. After a while, I felt breathless. I was scared so I told my mom. I got a big scolding. 'Didn't I tell you not to eat those beans?'.

I never touched fava beans again. I grew up, got married and have kids. When the doc told me my son has G6PD deficiency, my heart just stopped. I thought it was something serious. The doc said the same thing, no fava beans and no going near napthalene balls.

The doc said my son got G6PD through me. I googled for more info and found out G6PD is not a big deal. Many ppl have it.

Five years later, I was going through my old things and I found this old patient card of mine. Guess what? G6PD DEFICIENCY written in big, red letters.

I showed it to my mom asking 'I have G6PD, how come you never told me?'. Mom said 'The doc did not explain in detail, only for you not to consume fava beans. That's all.'

Luckily I did not have another episode of passing bloody urine because back then my grandma used a lot of napthalene balls in drawers and cupboards.

My mom's friend's 2 sons were admitted to the hospital because of going near the naphtalene balls.

So, be careful of fava beans and naphtalene balls.

I still do not know what variant I have. If I drink too much barley or soyabean, I will feel uneasy in the chest. Could it be related to G6PD?

* Avoid oxidant drugs such as the antimalarial drugs primaquine, chloroquine, pamaquine, and pentaquine.
    * Avoid nitrofurantoin.
    * Avoid nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin niridazole, norfloxacin, methylene blue, chloramphenicol, phenazopyridine, and vitamin K analogs.
    * Avoid sulfonamides such as sulfanilamide, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfacetamide, sulfadimidine, sulfapyridine, sulfamerazine, and sulfamethoxazole.
    * Avoid exposure to certain chemicals such as those in mothballs.
    * The following substances should also be avoided in G-6-PD deficiency:
    *
          o Acetanilid
          o Doxorubicin
          o Isobutyl nitrite
          o Naphthalene
          o Phenylhydrazine
          o Pyridium

Patients must avoid broad beans (ie, fava beans). Favism occurs only in the Mediterranean variety of G-6-PD deficiency.

G-6-PD deficiency affects all races. The highest prevalence is among persons of African, Asian, or Mediterranean descent. Severity varies significantly between racial groups because of different variants of the enzyme. Severe deficiency variants primarily occur in the Mediterranean population. The enzymatic variants in the African population have more activity and produce a milder form of the disease.

    * G-6-PD deficiency is an X-linked inherited disease that primarily affects men.

    * Homozygous women are found in populations in which the frequency of G-6-PD deficiency is quite high.

    * Heterozygous (carrier) women can develop hemolytic attacks.

glucose - 6'- phosphato-dehydrogenase enzyme ni penting untuk lindungi biomolecules rbc from being damaged by oxidative stress something to do with NADPH cycle ni ...so kalau u tak ader enzim ni,  your rbcells mmg prone to damage lah ...sebab tu ada istilah haemoltyic anaemia...

oh my frined ahing kie + bristish = hon may see namanya a dr now i bet, tak boleh minum wine..sebab tu lah di akata ..well wine is not for me...

and incase of G6PD-def,

if kena infections, this can easily leads to hemolysis...sbb2 yg u ckp tu la,RBC cannot protect themselves bila ada free radicals realeased from PHAGOCYTIC CELLS --> leads to intravascular and extravascular hemolysis

favism is the severe form of G6PD deficiency....makna nya level G6PD terlalu rendah atau almost zero.

My son has it. I know about fava beans and moth balls but I don't know anything about soya beans.. He has been drinking soya bean as well as taking kicap, but alhamdulillah so far tak de apa-apa. In fact ada 2-3 kali termasuk public toilet yang ada moth balls pun he seems okay. I suppose as long as he doesn't touch it's okay? Pls advice.

G6PD Deficiency ada banyak jenis (lebih kurang 300 - 400), ada yg mediteranean type, asian type. Ada yg mild, ada yg severe. Mungkin anak ice termasuk yg mild asian type. Cuma yg mediteranean type saja yg tak boleh ambik fava bean.
