IT was double joy for Media Prima Radio Networks (MPRN) this year. All of its three radio stations - Hot FM, Fly FM and its latestedition in the family, One FM – are all headed in the right direction,up.
This comes as the latest Nielsen Radio Audience Measurement Survey was released on Monday, revealing
HotFM as the overall number one station in Malaysia for the high-incomegroup, professionals and students (besides hosting the number onebreakfast show). The survey’s results also had some good news for itssister stations, Fly FM and One FM.
While One FM is all set to make history with its phenomenal increase of 86 per cent in total listenership
—making it the fastest growing Chinese radio station in the country —Fly FM in the other hand, is also enjoying sweet success with anincrease in its listenership.
The station leaped from 400,000 to 750,000 listeners this year, garnering the highest profile of urban listeners that accounts for 90per cent of its total listenership. Fly FM also maintained its numbertwo position in the English radio station category with a highlistenership within the target 18 to 30-year-old group.
One man that is definitely proud of the success is head of Media Prima Radio (Fly FM, Hot FM and One FM), Ahmad Izham Omar.
When met recently, Ahmad Izham said the recipe for the success is simple – give your listeners what they want.
“However, it is actually not as simple as ABC. We’ve got to do a lotwork and research to understand the listeners’ needs. But I’m glad allthe energy and hard work we’ve put into this has finally paid off,” hesaid.
Adding that the station would not easily be satisfied, he said likeany other competitor in the industry, Fly FM is also eyeing first spotin the ranks.
“We have great amount of respect for other radio stations which havebeen around for years, but we are here not only to entertain thelisteners by giving more variety to what they can listen to, but we arealso creating a healthy competition among the radio stations involved.I believe, by doing this, it will not only improve quality in stationperformances, but also improve the industry as a whole.”
Ahmad Izham added that there was only a small difference in the listenership between Fly FM and its close competitor, Hitz FM.
“I can say that the gap is becoming closer now. We will continue toimprove the station and hope that our listeners will continue theirsupport,” he said.
“I believe that besides offering more local songs to the listeners, which turned out to be the key factor
ofour success, the line-up of presenters also plays an important role. Our combination of presenters to lead certain programmes look prettyfruitful.”
Fly FM currently has nine programmes under its belt, including PagiShow, Music I Like, Rush Hour, Night Flight and Campur Chart.
Ahmad Izham said he is satisfied with the performance of allpresenters and the station has no plans to rebrand any programmes orchange its presenters at the moment.
“I admire their talents and each of them has their distinctive styleof presenting. They have brought a new look and taste for the stationwith their individual characteristics.
However, success will not be possible without the support from our loyal listeners,” he said.
As a way to thank their listeners, Fly FM will be holding a specialconcert next month, in conjunction with the station’s 4th anniversary.
Dubbed ‘Fly FM’s 4th Flyniversary’, the event is expected to take place on Nov 14 at Central Park Avenue.
“Fanswill be spoilt with performances from local bands and singers and weassure that they will be satisfied with the show this year,” he said.
Among the local performers that will be taking centre stage nextmonth are One Buck Short, Yuna, Caprice, Bittersweet, Bunkface,Estranged, Couple, James Baum, Shila, Lap Sap, Faizal Tahir, Disagreeand Joe Flizzow.
The best part of the event is definitely free admission for everyone.
Schedule to kick off from 5pm, the party will also be broadcast ‘live’ from Central Park Avenue.
